My best friend and I both had completely different upbringings.
My parents weren’t exactly poor, but we had to scrape by some years when my father was laid off from work for weeks at a time when construction projects slowed down in the city. By contrast, my friend’s parents owned a huge fruit production company and raised him on a massive property with over 100 acres of woodland encircling the house. He never worked while we were in grade school, but once all of his friends went off to college his parents had him work in one of their processing plants. They hoped that he could slowly work his way up the ranks learning one skill at a time. I loved getting free and discounted fruit on a regular basis, especially if they have batches that are just slightly below the packaging and retail standards. During his time working for parent’s company, my friend was becoming increasingly interested in beekeeping. He had multiple books on the subject and was eating artisan honey in a number of different foods and beverages. When he took his interest to the next level by purchasing beekeeping equipment to establish a few hives, I never expected it to morph into a full-fledged business in a matter of five years. He kept telling his dad about his idea to grow his existing beehives to create a honey farm. There was room on the property and his plan was to sell it to local stores and customers on the internet. His parents gave him a small loan and the space to create his honey farm and now he’s a successful honey artisan.
