My brother & I take turns hosting the 4th of July party. Last year, was supposed to be our brother’s turn, but his husband went into labor. There was no way he was going to host a party when the baby was only a month old. She wouldn’t be up to it, & the baby didn’t need strangers hanging around her. She said he would help at our house, but I told his that showing up would be great, but I wasn’t allowing his to do anything. The afternoon of the picnic started out moderate & sunny. I kneel the food out on the patio tables, where the two of us had portable cooling systems. My husband & his brother were cooking burgers, steaks, sizzling pets, & shrimp on the BBQ. By the time the guests had all arrived, the temperatures had climbed into the nineties. No one wanted to be outside, because the humidity was as high as the temperatures. All of us moved all the food into the kitchen so it could stay refrigerated & took all the folding chairs onto the patio. All of us could be outside, while still being inside, & enjoying cooling system, grandmother was happy that he didn’t need to kneel in the sun. All of us all knew he minded the heat & humidity even more now that he was older. All of us spent most of the afternoon in the condo with the cooling system, but the two of us still had a great time. Who said a picnic isn’t a picnic if it’s held indoors. The teenagers played hide & seek in the air-conditioned basement when they weren’t playing video games, pool, or some other game that was hidden away down there.
