I locked my kids out of the thermostat the other day when I left home on a trip.
I have a smart thermostat with controls set up through an app on my smartphone.
Whenever I get out of range of the thermostat for any length of time, my heating and cooling system shuts itself off. Of course, not all smart thermostats are like that. I found out that my smart thermostat has this option where you can set it to only work whenever you are within a certain radius. I had it set that way because I was always the one who got home first during the day and it just made sense. We ended up saving a whole lot of money on our heating and cooling bills because I was using this particular function on our smart thermostat. I have really been living with smart thermostats since we got it installed last year. It has been one of the best purchases that we have ever made for our heating and cooling system for our home. However, the other day I had to go on a trip for work, and I totally forgot to change the settings on the thermostat. I had the thermostat controls on my phone and there was no way for the kids to be able to change them at home. It was kind of funny because I was on a really long plane trip where they could not get in touch with me and they were all freezing in the house. The furnace thought that nobody was home because the thermostat did not tell it to turn on!
