As a middle school teacher, I sometimes agree to take on the not-so-coveted task of teaching summer school.

I love what I do and I love my students, but summer school means working with kids who usually have behavioral problems in a very hot classroom.

In the past, I have used two or three fans that are running constantly. And some days I have taken the class outside for a lesson, but there are usually too many distractions outside to keep their attention. But this year I decided to look into purchasing my own portable air conditioner. What I found on some sites was that they are better than a fan, but not much. I also read that although portable air conditioners have wheels, they don’t move well on carpets or over raised thresholds between rooms. Finally, one website stated that if a portable air conditioner is the only choice, you still need fans to distribute the cooled air around the room. In the end, it seemed that there were too many strikes against purchasing a portable air conditioner. The final straw was the price, which would have almost cancelled out the income that I would make from teaching summer school.

I am an HVAC technician, and as with many other professions, I am required to take annual continuing education classes to keep up-to-date on the ever-changing technologies of heating, ventilation and cooling.

I recently completed a class on solar power, since I know that clean and sustainable energy sources are becoming more and more in demand.

Creating heat from the sun seems pretty obvious, but I learned that complete heating and air conditioning systems can also be set up. Solar modules are installed to power the building’s central heat and air conditioning system. The solar-powered air conditioner is unique in that you can plug in the solar panels and start using the air conditioner immediately. This would be a hybrid of traditional and solar electrical usage in that the unit would run off solar power during the daytime and off the utility company at night. With two or three solar panels, the resulting savings are incredible. Solar-assisted cooling systems use a thermal-chemical absorption to produce cool air. This process is similar to refrigeration except that there is no compressor involved. Heating systems, such as radiant-floor systems, are another system of heating that are able to convert to solar systems. Pipes that are embedded in the floor contain liquid that is heated using solar powered energy. Other heating and cooling systems, such as baseboard and portable units, are currently in the process of converting to solar-powered energy, all driven by the demand for economical and environmental solutions. By the time I finished the course, I was prepared to sit for the certification exam, which I passed. And since most states now require that HVAC contractors be certified in order to work on new solar technologies, I feel like I’m already ahead of the game.

A few months ago, I started noticing that our electric bills kept going up.

Since it was during the summer, I couldn’t understand why it was happening since our house never seemed cool enough – despite the fact that I kept turning the thermostat cooler and cooler.

First I called our energy company to inquire about my rising bills. They suggested that we call a heating and cooling specialist who could check for any leaks in my air conditioning system. The next day I called our HVAC contractor about the problem. He offered a few tips that I could try on my own to find any leaks in the system. After sealing any cracks in the system, he said that I should still call him back to inspect the system and possibly perform an a/c tune-up. But in the event that I couldn’t locate the leaks, he said that it’s imperative that a professional HVAC technician take care of it. He assured me that whichever method I chose, my home would be more energy efficient and lower cooling costs would result.

Since my son balked at that, the technician then showed him how he could clean the outside unit’s fins with a garden hose. He said that he could do it, but that he’d have to charge one hundred dollars more. My son thanked him, paid the one hundred and forty dollars for the house call, and cleaned the fins himself. He was pretty proud of himself once the air conditioner started running again.
