My HVAC guy taught me how to troubleshoot the AC Blower

I recently decided to attend a workshop at one of the nearby home improvement stores, and this particular Workshop was for women only and was all about your HVAC system.

Since I know nothing about how an HVAC system works, I was afraid I would be embarrassed in the class.

It turns out though, that most people do not know how the heating and cooling systems work in your house. This is especially true for women. I know that all I really know about my a see if when to turn my thermostat knob from heating to cooling. Also, if it’s too hot in the house, turn the thermostat down a little. Anything more than that, and I am lost. That is when I discovered that most HVAC systems are called Forced air heating and cooling systems. That means that the air that comes out of the vents that is cold during the summer and warm during the winter is pushed through the ductwork and into your house rooms. I always just called it heating or cooling, and I never knew that there was something called forced air systems. Anyway, that was the first thing I learned. The second thing I learned was how to troubleshoot when the AC doesn’t seem to be working. I learned that if the outside AC unit seems to be running normally but there is no air coming out of the AC vents, the problem is likely with the AC blower. If I went and turned down the air-conditioning thermostat and there was still no air coming out of the air vents, I would need to check something and I could be reasonably sure that it was the AC blower that was the problem. I also learned that it is very rare for an HVAC thermostat to break. I always thought the thermostat was the thing that was probably broken because one time 30 years ago my AC was broken and it turned out to be the thermostat. It is not until today that I learned that that is very rare.
