I was already nervous, being the first from my HVAC training class to be hired by a company in my area.
I was under a lot of pressure to perform well right out of the starting gate.
Either do the job right, or you will not be doing it at all, our teacher would say. It didn’t matter if it was the first day on the job or the 501st. Put your personal life in your pocket, forget about anything outside of work; focus on the customer and their needs. If I couldn’t get this done, I would not be able to keep a job as an HVAC contractor. This isn’t something they taught in school – it’s taught at home, and it’s something I was taught growing up. I hoped I’d be able to practice what I learned when the time came. Do the job right, or don’t do it all, my dad said. This is the same thing my HVAC teacher was telling me. I was hoping I could hold up to the standards others expected of me. I headed to work the following day, starting my first day of work. I was sent on several inspections, and I consistently had another HVAC contractor with me. I was proud of the work I did, and I couldn’t wait to show the boss what I could do once on my own.
