She wanted a haunted house, so I showed her one.

My best friend told me she wanted to live in a haunted house.

I thought she was an odd duck, but who was I to tell her? I swore I would never stay in the haunted house with her, but I took her to see one that was for sale.

I knew the house wasn’t really haunted, but I didn’t think she would know it. I knew the older gentleman who lived in the house, but they recently put him in an assisted living facility. His children put the house up for sale. Whenever the furnace turned on, the air would whistle through the ductwork. The fireplace was interesting, and they called it a singing fireplace. The sounds it made sounded like the strumming of a bass cello. I loved the old house, and I would never be afraid to stay. I remembered my best friend lived there when we were kids. We used to have sleep outs in the living room, and listen to the sounds the furnace and fireplace made. Ellie had a sleepover for all the girls in our class one weekend, and I was the only one who stayed the entire night. The furnace and fireplace had them screaming and unable to sleep. When I took my friend to the house, Ellie was waiting for us. We showed Cass the house and asked what she thought about. The house didn’t impress Cass until the furnace turned on. She smiled and said she was buying the house. I don’t know what she’ll do in the summer when the furnace and fireplace aren’t in use.
