When I moved into my apartment, the property owner told me that all I needed to keep the condo cool was a fan; and I wondered why they didn’t have a/c in the condo building, but I didn’t ask.
I took the girl at her word, then two months later, we were into the Summer months. It was sweltering in my apartment, and I needed something more than a fan. I also bought a window air conditioner to put in the window, but a single of the neighbors complained. She told me they weren’t allowed a window a/c unit, as well as they wanted to know why I was. I didn’t understand anything about not being allowed to use a window a/c unit. I called the property owner, and she told me that running the AC device was grounds for having me evicted. I couldn’t understand what I was hearing. There was nothing in my lease that mentioned not being able to use window AC units. I didn’t suppose they could truly evict me either. Two weeks later, I gained notice of eviction. I took the lease to my friend, who was a lawyer. She couldn’t find anything in the lease that even hinted at not being allowed a window AC unit, or that it could be grounds for eviction, and when she saw who the property owner was, she shook her head. She said the girl was one of the shadiest property owners in the city, as well as I was up for a fight. The only thing I could do was move, as well as argue through renter court about getting back my deposit.
