I joined the Navy, but they still tried to convince me not to join the HVAC unit.

When I turned 18, I joined the Navy. I had read all the brochures, but they were the ones who offered classes for HVAC. I wanted to be an HVAC technician, and I also wanted to be on a submarine. After going through basics, I was talking to my CO about what I wanted to do. I told them I wanted to be on a submarine and I also wanted to be an HVAC technician. My CO told me he didn’t think I was thinking this over long enough. He didn’t think I should be an HVAC technician. I asked if he thought it was wrong of me being an HVAC technician, or being an HVAC technician on a submarine. When he said I was being insubordinate, I saluted and said yes sir and asked if I could be dismissed. I swore I saw a smile on his face when I turned around, but I couldn’t be sure. Three weeks later, the CO called me into his office and gave me my paperwork. It was where I would be stationed and what my training and/or job would be. The first thing I had to get through was HVAC school. Once I got my certification, I would be working in the boatyard, and training on submarines before I was stationed on one. I hugged him before I had second thoughts on what I was doing. He hugged me back and told me not to let him down. I couldn’t believe he took me seriously and signed me up for the HVAC classes, even though he sounded like he was totally against it.
