I had spent the previous five years working for my father’s Heating and Air Conditioning dealer. He told me I was an expensive employee, and if I wanted to attend Heating and Air Conditioning school, he would pay for it. He was paying for my education and planned to spend my money while I was in school. This did not make much sense to me. I questioned why he would spend my money on his education in heating and air conditioning. He stated that he anticipated me to work on weekends. He still needed inventory completed, and he also had other tasks for me to complete. He did not expect me to work in the afternoons when I was in school, but he demanded at least five hours on weekends. Not until I received my first paycheck did I realize he was paying me for the entire week, not just the ten hours I worked. He was aware that my transportation expenses to and from school were in addition to my other expenses. He did not want me to be concerned with any of that. This was his method of assisting me. It took me one year to complete Heating and Air Conditioning school, plus an additional six weeks to complete the certification course and take the certification exam. Before I took the certification exam, my father made me sign a contract. Since he paid for my heating and air conditioning, I was required to provide him with heating and air conditioning for one year. I was free to go to any Heating and Air Conditioning dealer of my choosing at the end of the year, or I could remain with him.
