They had baseball bats in their hands.

My sons were supposed to be cleaning up the backyard.

I told them to mow the grass and trim the hedges while I was at work.

When I got home, they were in the backyard, but they had a baseball, a bat and three friends standing around. I looked at the length of the grass, the hedges and the weeds in the yard. My oldest son smiled and acted like nothing was wrong. I walked into the yard, picked up the bases they had on the ground and told the boys it was time to go home. My youngest son handed me the bat, and I took the ball from my oldest son. There wasn’t a word spoken as they went to the garage and pulled out the lawn mower and hedge clippers. I was walking back to the shed when I glanced at the weeds around the AC unit. I was getting ready to tell them to clean up the weeds when I noticed all the dents in the AC unit. I turned toward the boys and they stopped in their tracks. They knew I had seen the dents. My oldest son told me it was an accident. They hadn’t meant to hit the AC unit. He had hit a line drive and the air conditioner was in the way. He even told me it was a good thing the air conditioner was there. If it hadn’t been for the air conditioner, the ball would have hit the house and maybe broken a window. I looked at the air conditioner and back at him. There were no windows near the AC unit, but I had no words. I walked into the house and left them working on the lawn.
