It’s nice having an immense fenced-in yard when you own many sizable pets.
- I grew up with a chihuahua who loved running around in our yard despite it’s considerably smaller size, even though I could have never expected how much a pet like a golden retriever runs like it is in a natural habitat.
We got many of them as puppies and they transformed from these tiny little puppies into big beasts in under a year. It was a fascinating transformation for me to watch because it was my first time experiencing it. We were careful to not reinforce bad behaviors while rewarding great behavior. Still, they need that sizable lawn in the back so they can run around and tire themselves out. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to put them outside in many days after they both got into a yellow jacket nest and got stung repeatedly. We had to supply them antihistamines to get the swelling to go down. That’s when we called an exterminator to do yellow jacket removal in our yard. He came out the following day and swept the yard for as many hives and nests that he could find. Once he was finished, he told us to let him know if he missed any yellow jackets within the following week. Thankfully he successfully removed all of the yellow jackets from our yard and we never had to call him again. It wasn’t cheap, however I’m excited that our yard is free of yellow jackets and our pets can run around and play again in total peace.
