I never thought that I would become obsessed with essential oils love I am now. I always bought and burned candles in my apartment, especially while in the Wintertide holidays. My closet is full of boxes of votive and Starbucks Latte light candles in numerous scents from pine to peppermint. Although organic candles don’t have any potentially toxic fillers, they’re also a lot more upscale to purchase than the cheap a singles with synthetic ingredients. If you use these candles yearly, you could end up developing an upscale habit that rivals some drug addictions in cost. Discovering essential oils couldn’t have come at a better time because my rent increased and my salary hasn’t budged in over 2 years. I bought an essential oil diffuser for $20 and have become enamored with the affordable $6 bottles of oil at the local supercenter. They are sometimes equal in quality to the $20 bottles of “premium” oil, and they tend to last for weeks if I rotate them. Recently I l earned that I can get the stinks to circulate throughout my entire cabin if I put the diffuser near my air return. Whenever the cooling system starts to cycle, it pulls the oil vapors into the air duct and then redistributes it to every room. By the time the cooling system is finished with its cycle, you will have a pleasant essential oil stink in every room. This prevents having to put oil directly on my cooling system filters, which I’m not fond of doing. It’s so much easier to just strategically locale my oil diffuser so the vapors get into the Heating and A/C air return.

Although I have always been obsessed with pets, I had never actually owned a dog or a pet until my girlfriend and I moved in together last year.

She was homesick and missing all of her pets at her parent’s house.

I had everything from fish tanks to gerbils and rabbits. Secretly I always wanted a pet, however my parents refused to get myself and others a bigger pet that came with more responsibilities. Now that I have a dog and pet together, I realize in area why my parents were so reluctant to do this when I was younger. These animals take a lot of work and responsibility. Although cats can be easier to maintain on a day by day basis, you have to work with them and train them early or they will climb all over the countertops and appliances in the house. Dogs are notorious for chewing on shoes, baseboards, and furniture legs. I suppose my least favorite area about having cats or pets is the large amount of hair that they leave all over your house. Whenever I previously changed my cooling system filters after four to six weeks of use, there was so much pet hair that I had to beginning doing it every 3 weeks instead. I still find hair after 3 weeks, however it isn’t enough to completely split off the air flow going into the cooling system. Once I get paid again, I’m going to purchase media air cleaners for the cabin so this hair and dander can get collected in their filters before it can find its way into our cooling system filter.

I work with one of the biggest companies in the industry.

My friend had been having an issue with his system but he did not have the funds to contact an HVAC repairman. He would complain of how his indoor comfort had been compromised over the few weeks. Since I had experience with these quality HVAC units, I made a deal with him. I would assess and fix his central heater and he would bake me one of his famous cheesecakes. This was my favorite flavored cake. When I got there, I started right away assessing the boiler. I first started with the furnace filter, as per my prediction, it was filthy. My friend confirmed that the heating contractor who installed the new HVAC equipment had indeed advised him on how to care for it. He had become confused by the heating technology but with regular interaction with the electric furnace or oil furnace and had given up on caring for his unit. After having endless issues and always using money he did not repair the unit, he was determined to take care of the unit seriously.

As we go into winter, We all want to feel comfortable at work and even in our homes.

How can we manage this though? Since heating technology plays a huge role in keeping us comfortable during winter, we need to take good care of it.

The question is how do you ensure that you take good care of these systems even without the help of a heating contractor? Well, my HVAC repairman has shared some important tips over the years that have really helped in keeping my quality HVAC unit in tiptop condition. One of the most important factors was to ensure we put the central heater through a furnace/heater tune-up at least once to twice a year. These maintenance sessions thoroughly ensure the unit as well as replace any worn-out components. The Heating and cooling provider usually has discounts and if not, he can very well advise on the best unit to suit your needs since he has dealt with very many systems over the years. He understands which new HVAC equipment would be best suited for your space. One thing we can do ourselves is to replace or clean the furnace filter by ourselves as it is a straightforward duty. A heater works by circulating warm air throughout the premises in order to warm the occupants. The filter in the boiler traps the dirt, dust, and debris before circulating the air within the house. I have learned over the years to handle the boiler repairs as they arise so as to avoid them growing into a more serious issue. I do this by paying attention to my unit, like the electric heater is naturally quiet so any noise will indicate it is an issue. I have found that oil furnaces need more attention.

Over the last three months, I have noticed that my energy bills are through the roof.

So I decided to contact an electrician to assess the situation for me. He established that the culprit was none other than my electric furnace. A year ago, I replaced my oil furnace with my current unit and had never experienced such ridiculous energy use. I contacted my HVAC repairman as I could not figure out what exactly the issue was. The first question the technician asked was when was the last time I had scheduled and executed a furnace/heater tune-up on the boiler since installation. The last time was about two years back, which was also the first time. When he further assessed the heater he discovered that the furnace filter was so dirty that barely any air was able to pass through. I had also not changed the filter since the unit was installed. I mean I was in a horrible state, even if it had been a quality HVAC system about two years back. The heating contractor started work on the system, and he and his team thoroughly cleaned the unit. I learned that this unit also had heating technology like many new HVAC equipments in the market. This technology, I found out, would alert me in case of any issue or any component needing boiler repair. I also had to replace my thermostat. I got a good deal from the heating and cooling provider. The technician explained that not doing maintenance on the unit, central heater, was causing the unit to strain and not function on its capacity, therefore, using up too much energy.

My unit had been acting up for a while now, I always seem to be in contact with my technician all throughout the fall.

• A few weeks before winter, I decided enough was enough and so I started looking around for a new unit.

There were a few things I needed to consider before selecting the perfect quality HVAC for me. One of the things was quality heating as well as the new heating technology that I had been hearing came with new HVAC equipment. I contacted my HVAC repairman for advice on the best unit. He suggested I get an electric furnace. Though I was worried about whether the unit would mean high energy bills. He advised that this unit was better than the oil furnace because of all the issues that he witnessed other customers facing like leaks and sometimes the fuel was not available. I contacted the heating and cooling provider and fortunately, they had a sale for heaters. The heating contractor uninstalled the old central heater and installed the new unit. Since I had a lot of issues with my previous unit, I was going to jot down every piece of advice from the experts in order to ensure that my boiler does not give me issues and that the boiler repairs are not as much. One important tip was that to keep the unit in good condition, I needed to schedule at least two furnace/heater tune-up sessions every year. To maintain and improve the indoor air quality, I needed to ensure that I replace the furnace filter after every 30 to 90 days. I made sure to follow these guidelines all through winter and I must say that they did come in handy and I did not have any major issues all through winter.

Lately, I have been learning about energy efficient HVAC systems and green technology in general.

My wife and I have been talking about doing all sorts of things.

We have a good amount of land so we thought maybe we could install windmills and solar panels for getting off the grid. We didn’t enjoy having to pay for expensive energy bills each month, but we figured that was something everybody had to do. That is except for the people who choose to invest in their own energy creating supplies like solar panels! So the solar panels were actually the first thing we went for. We considered the wind mills, but realized it wasn’t windy enough in our location for them to help well enough. The solar panels have been working beautifully though. Then we realized that we could use a more energy efficient HVAC system. I wanted to know what was the best and the HVAC professional told us that a geothermal system was the way to go especially if we wanted to invest in green energy. We learned about how underneath the ground, you are able to access stable heating energy which allows you to use a geothermal heat pump throughout the year. You can use it for your cooling and heating needs alike, and these systems will last a very long time with minimal maintenance requirements. This sounded wonderful to me and the best thing was that it was the most energy efficient HVAC system around. We had this installed and before we knew it, we were getting paid by the electric company because we were putting unused energy back onto the grid!

When my wife and I had the opportunity to upgrade our HVAC system, I wanted to have something amazing.

• I wanted something that would be extremely energy efficient and that would impress my buddies who are not very easily impressed.

My wife said we should go for radiant heated floors, but I didn’t think that would be nearly good enough. She kept on about the radiant heated floors though and I said that maybe we would have something like that installed in our bathrooms. That was the main reason why she wanted something like that because she can’t deal with stepping out of the shower onto frosty tiles. Sometimes she runs a portable heater in the bathroom and I honestly think that can be dangerous. Well, when we had an HVAC technician come over, he told us about the different HVAC systems we could go for. We heard all about geothermal systems, boilers, heat pumps, and even ductless mini splits. When the guy started talking about the rapid heating and cooling systems, I was intrigued. He said this type of system would require brand new ductwork which happens to be narrow and easier to install than traditional ductwork. He said it was low profile and this type of system could heat or cool the home in as little as 15 minutes. I laughed and said he couldn’t be telling the truth, but he promised that these systems are that powerful, yet energy efficient. I realized that this was exactly what I was looking for and so we went for the installation. I’m so happy because even my buddies are impressed with what our new HVAC can do, and we are saving big on the energy bills!

As I became older and finally graduated from school, I realized that I just wanted to travel to different places in the world.

I decided to study abroad and I got into some very interesting classes in various locations. My parents fully supported me because they thought I could easily expand my horizons this way by learning about different cultures and even pick up on the different languages. Well, most of the places I went to provided me with a humbling experience. I learned how to survive without having a cooling system. The place I was studying had a more mild climate than what I was used to, but I honestly had never gone through the hot season without using an A/C system before. When I first asked why there wasn’t an A/C system anywhere I went, people laughed at me. It was explained to me that they didn’t really use cooling systems in those parts, and this was something that was very interesting to me. It became shocking to me when I learned that a majority of the energy usage in America comes from people using their HVAC systems. That’s a crazy thing to think about, yet here in some of these other countries, they don’t waste nearly as much electricity! When I eventually came back home, I was a changed person. I suddenly felt I didn’t need to use the A/C in the hot season and I just used fans like how I did when I studied abroad. Everybody thinks I’m nuts now, but I save a huge amount of energy!

When I saw an HVAC commercial recently, they said they had ductless mini splits systems on sale for 50% off.

• I was in disbelief because I always thought it would be wonderful to have a ductless HVAC system.

So I had an HVAC professional come out to provide me with a quote. When we were trying to determine the best locations for the indoor units, I realized we had an issue with a particular area. I said I didn’t want a hole through a particular wall, but the HVAC professional said we could do the set up a little bit differently. He said we could actually install one unit in the ceiling because their ceiling units were amazing. The hole didn’t have to be in that location and they could just run the line sets a different path. When I considered the plan, it sounded great. So I went forward with the installation and these HVAC professionals made everything look so easy. I joked with the guys that I might have been able to install this system on my own, but I appreciate their hard work. The one guy actually agreed with me and said most of these ductless mini splits were DIY systems. A lot of homeowners actually do install these systems according to the guy, and I could have done it just as easily, especially since this particular HVAC system had line sets with pre compressed refrigerant. They didn’t even have to charge the system, they were able to release the refrigerant from the line sets very easily after they were all connected!
