I was having my baby shower on Sunday.

• My mom had been watching the weather and promised we would have a good day for the baby shower.

I didn’t blame her when it rained all day Saturday and it didn’t stop until early Sunday morning. I was hoping the rain would go away so we could sit out on the porch. An hour after the rain stopped, the heat came back, and the humidity was so back that I felt like my clothes were crawling on me. I couldn’t take off enough clothing to be comfortable, and I was miserable. My feet were swollen so badly that it was hard to walk. All I wanted to do was sit down and cry. When ants invaded our candy dishes, I broke down, and we took the baby shower inside. Mom had the air conditioning on high and the thermostat set low. I sat in a chair where the air conditioning could blow over me, and they propped my feet up on the ottoman. I didn’t think this was how I was going to spend my entire baby shower, but I was wrong. I didn’t care what I had to do to make everyone happy to be there, as long as I didn’t need to get away from the air conditioning or the ottoman. As everyone was leaving, and aunt I barely knew, told me I was going to have a girl, and I’d be lucky if she wasn’t born in a day or two. Two days after the baby shower, I went into labor. I had my feet propped up on the ottoman and the air conditioning blowing over my swollen belly when I felt the first pangs of labor.

Last year, was supposed to be my brother’s turn, but his wife went into labor.

There was no way she was going to host a party when the baby was only a week old. She wouldn’t be up to it, and the baby didn’t need strangers hanging around her. She said she would help at my house, but I told her that showing up would be great, but I wasn’t allowing her to do anything. The day of the picnic started out warm and sunny. I lay the food out on the patio tables, where we had portable air conditioners. My husband and his brother were cooking burgers, steaks, hot dogs, and shrimp on the BBQ. By the time the guests had all arrived, the temperatures had climbed into the nineties. No one wanted to be outside, because the humidity was as high as the temperatures. We moved all the food into the kitchen so it could stay refrigerated and took all the folding chairs onto the patio. We could be outside, while still being inside, and enjoying air conditioning. Grandma was happy that she didn’t need to sit in the sun. We all knew she minded the heat and humidity even more now that she was older. We spent most of the day in the house with the air conditioning, but we still had a great time. Who said a picnic isn’t a picnic if it’s held indoors. The kids played hide and seek in the air-conditioned basement when they weren’t playing video games, pool, or some other game that was hidden away down there.

They had a large pavilion that seats fifty people, and the bathrooms were close to the pavilion.

Last year, mom and dad sold their house and bought something smaller. They said it was time to downsize. The only house with an area large enough to hold fifty to one hundred people, was mine. We had a large field near the house, and all we had to do was rent a large tent and several large picnic tables. My parents said about renting some portable air conditioning units for the tent, but even they weren’t enough to keep people cool when the tent was in the middle of an open field. The kids were fine with running out in the sun, but our family had a lot of elderly people. My husband opened the enclosed patio for anyone who wanted to enjoy the air conditioning. He put a sign up to the door that no one between the ages of five and forty were allowed inside, unless you had a medical reason. I chuckled at that one. There was no way I was going to stay outside in the heat when I could go into my ‌patio and enjoy the air conditioning. I told my husband that my mother and grandmother wanted me to sit and play poker with them. He knew it was a sorry excuse, but the only one I could come up with. I could hear music coming from the tent, and remembered there were portable air conditioners inside. We danced, played cards and games, and enjoyed the air conditioning in the tent, until long after midnight.

My daughter planned her wedding for late in the summer.

• She rented several pavilions in a park and had an outdoor wedding.

The people who owned the park, laid a dancing floor under one pavilion so we could have a good time. All they asked for their help, was to get something to eat at the reception. The week before the wedding, the temperatures were beautiful and there was sunshine. Two days before the wedding, the weather channel was showing a cold front coming in. They talked about showers, cooler temperatures, and some wind. We all kept our fingers crossed as the day of the wedding arrived. The temperature was barely in the forties when we headed to the pavilions to do some decorating. By the time the wedding march started, the temps were still in the fifties and it had started to rain. The owners of the park were kind enough to gather up several patio heaters and scatter them around the pavilion where people were sitting and eating. Older people and those with small children or babies, went home right after the cake was cut. I’m not sure what would have happened if the owners hadn’t had any patio heaters to scatter around. I’m sure more people would have left the reception because it was too chilly to enjoy yourself. My new son-in-law told me they had receptacles everywhere, and all we had to do was buy some space heaters. At least the people’s feet would be warm. It wasn’t the people’s feet I was worried, but the bride and her bridal party who had summer wedding attire on.

When my husband and I lived up north, we always turned the air conditioning off when we left the house.

We didn’t need to worry about it getting so suffocatingly hot that it was dangerous for our health if the air conditioning wasn’t on.

When we older, we wanted to move further south. Neither of us could handle the cold anymore, but we didn’t want to be so far south that the heat and humidity was all year round. We left to go shopping one afternoon. My husband turned off all the fans and lights, while turned the air conditioning off. We weren’t gone for over three hours, but that was more than enough for mold and mildew to ‌form. I turned the fans on and my husband turned on the air conditioning. We could smell the humidity, heat, and mold in the air. We were lucky to get home when we did. My husband filled the sink with cold water and bleach and we wiped all the window sills, woodwork, and walls with the bleach solution. A couple more hours and we may have needed to have professional mold remediation. Our AC unit is now running 24/7.

What is the point of even having an if you refuse to use it? It got me motivated enough that I rode our bike up to Walmart and got the retail price for the cheapest portable If he refused to let me use the I would just have to buy our own and use that instead. I’m not sure what exactly happened with Aunt Ruth, even though she has been silly my whole life, then she isn’t dangerously crazy, no violence or criminal behavior or anything appreciate that.

• She does think in aliens & government conspiracies, & enjoys to stay inside her apartment virtually all of the time.

She also doesn’t appreciate strangers coming into her house, which leaves her in quite the cucumber. I was a single of the only people she allowed to come over properly, & I helped her out as much as I could, but bringing over groceries is a single thing, but when her central Heating, Ventilation and A/C method broke there was not much I could do to remedy it. She said she would pay myself and others $500 if I could service the cooling method without having to call in a worker. I explained that she could absolutely find an Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech for less than that amount of currency, but it wasn’t about the currency for her. She just didn’t want a stranger in her apartment for any reason, so if I could find a way to service the cooling she would pay myself and others that currency. I had to try, right? I started by finding out the make & model of her cooling system, & then looking up tutorial videos on Youtube to match it. That took a long time, & didn’t help myself and others service the cooling, so I decided to make a bold transport & buy a small, portable cooling system from Walmart. It only cost $150, which meant I would still profit a nice $350 & Ruth would have cooling.
