Making a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get healthy

This year was tough on my health & fitness.

Switching from working in an office setting to being entirely at home gave me an excuse not to exercise. I developed some problematic eating habits. Since I was wearing my sweatpants & oversized T-shirts every day, I didn’t really notice the weight gain. Because I had easy access to a supply of tasty snacks, I was always munching on something. When I was getting ready for the family Christmas party, I discovered that none of my clothes fit the same anymore. I took a close look at myself in the mirror and was appalled with what I saw. I’d obviously put on quite a few pounds. I’d also lost muscle tone and gotten soft. I immediately made a New Year’s resolution to take better care of my health and fitness. I began with a visit to the grocery store. I looked for healthy foods, including baby carrots, celery, broccoli, apples, bananas, grapes, humus & a variety of fruits & vegetables. I bought a case of bottled water. I returned home & emptied my refrigerator, freezer & cupboards. I got rid of all of the cookies, pretzels, potato chips, cupcakes, candy & ice cream. I also bought some workout equipment to create a home gym. I chose a yoga mat, a set of free weights, weighted balls & a jump rope. I forced myself to get up earlier in the morning so I’d have enough time to workout before starting my workday. The first several workouts were torture. I wound up extremely sore for the rest of the day. However, I had more energy. I was more productive and enjoyed a more positive mindset. I suddenly felt better about myself & came up with new goals for all areas of my life. I’ve included walks, runs & bike rides before and after work.

Menopause causes all sorts of problems

I am 55 years old, & I’ve been involved in the symptoms & stages of menopause for over five years.

I now deal with constant insomnia and restless sleep. It’s nearly impossible for me to fall asleep at night. It’s no surprise to me when I wake up several times during the night, need to pee & have difficulty getting back to sleep. I get so frustrated & bored just lying in bed. I sometimes get up in order to accomplish something. I wash floors and windows, fold the laundry or workout. I manage some of my most beneficial workouts at four o’clock in the morning. I have seen that it’s a great way to get rid of the stress & annoyance caused by insomnia. I understand that high intensity exercises won’t help me to relax & fall quickly asleep, but I feel good that I’m being productive. It’s especially helpful because menopause led to my metabolism slowing down. I haven’t done anything different with my workout routine or eating habits, but I’ve gained weight. I have noticed a bulge in my tummy & there are handles at my sides that were never there before. Because I exercise every single day for about an hour and am very conscientious about eating clean, weight gain is especially frustrating. My workouts are rigorous. I usually jump rope for 30 to 60 minutes. I go on six-mile runs or ride my bike for several hours. I’m always wet with sweat at the conclusion of my workout. I stay away from fast food and don’t drink coffee. I have been a vegetarian for many years, & I am careful about eating sweets. While weight gain is a normal side-effect of aging, I find it unacceptable.

Mini trampoline is excellent for a workout

The possibilities are almost limitless

I workout for approximately 60 minutes on a daily basis. While I attempt to switch up the type of exercises, the sessions can become rather repetitive. I occasionally go for a run or a bike ride. Sometimes, if weather allows, I will swim laps or kayak. Most days, I stick with my home gym & perform a series of lunges, squats, burpees & mountain climbers. I include various kinds of ab crunches & some weight lifting. I almost always jump rope for twenty to thirty minutes & like to add several balance exercises. For Mother’s Day, my son gave me a mini trampoline. It has added a very different element to my workouts. I had no idea what wonderful exercise jumping on a trampoline could be. I am using new muscles & coming up with all sorts of interesting means of using the trampoline to my advantage. The initial few sessions, I was sort of awkward on the trampoline. I was scared of falling off & stuck to jumping with my feet together. I eventually added jumping jacks, side to side jumps & twisting jumps. I worked my way up half turns & 360 turns, high knees & tuck jumps. I’ve also placed my palms on the ground & my feet on the trampoline to do plank holds and pushups. I can also jump my feet in & out & side to side. I will sit on the trampoline with my feet up & bounce on my butt to target abdominal muscles. The possibilities are almost limitless. I have such fun jumping that time goes by quickly. I am motivated to get better, find new skills & I like the results I’m seeing.

It’s all about who you know

None of the Heating and Air Conditioning techs I talked to would help myself and others out, their own response was that I needed a completely modern system! Finally I talked to a buddy of a friend, who had his own history with custom-building air conditioning systems

If you know the right person, you can get anything done. Once I had a major vehicle issue late at night on a Monday, just before a holiday, and I thought I was screwed. A buddy of mine said he knew a guy who could help me. After a quick PC call, I went to an overnight garage, where there was a full crew of vehicle mechanics working graveyard shift. They were able to hook myself and others up and I drove away within multiple minutes… all because of knowing the right person. Some weeks ago I had a similar experience involving our central Heating and Air Conditioning system, 1 that was only recently resolved. It seems that the previous owners to this home had managed their own Heating and Air Conditioning plan over the years. Instead of having it done by professionals, they had tinkered with the air conditioning system and the gas furnace and modified them in their own ways. What this meant now, after multiple years of experimentation, was that the central Heating and Air Conditioning plan was a Frankenstein’s monster of parts and pieces from unusual systems. None of the Heating and Air Conditioning techs I talked to would help myself and others out, their own response was that I needed a completely modern system! Finally I talked to a buddy of a friend, who had his own history with custom-building air conditioning systems. He was a weirdo and a stoner, however was also amazing with breaking down and rebuilding outdated cooling systems. I still could not afford a completely modern Heating and Air Conditioning system, I just needed this outdated rickety pile of junk to start working again!

In the meantime, I have to use a tiny little AC unit

I will disclose that this is more home than I really needed.

It was a good price, so even though it was a lot bigger than I had planned for, I could not pass it up.

What could the down side be for having too large of a house, right? We know how bad it sucks to live in a space that is too small, however too large shouldn’t be any sort of problem. Well, it turns out I was mostly right, there aren’t a whole lot of troubles that stem from having too much space… except for the utility bills. I need to crack down on our energy saving tip these days, because trying to pay the utility bills for heating and cooling this place are driving myself and others to the poorhouse! I had an Heating and Air Conditioning tech come over and give the place an inspection, and he says that I will need multiple modern systems. I about choked on our tongue when I heard that – multiple Heating and Air Conditioning systems? He explained that the home was so large there were multiple complete Heating and Air Conditioning systems in the house, 1 for the west wing, 1 for the east. I would really need to get both of them upgraded, and he provided myself and others a price quote of about twenty thoUnited Statesnd bucks for everything I would need to get done. I thanked him, and then drove to the closest Walmart and bought a couple of space gas furnaces and a couple of portable air conditioning systems, but until I win the lottery, I will have to make do with these smaller units of heating and cooling!

More than just heating and cooling labor needed

My kid thought both of us had ghosts in the attic. I wish it was that straight-forward! We moved into this remote farmhouse knowing that it was a fixer-upper, however both of us really didn’t know how much fixing was required. The place had been empty for years, so while it had not been damaged, it had not been cared for in quite some time, and my wife and I thought both of us could handle anything except for maybe the specialty labor that would come later, then even though the central plan was antique, the gas furnace in the basement still worked fine. Air conditioning would be a concern for another week, there were too multiple other things that needed fixing first. The first night there, little Jane said there were ghosts in the attic, however what she was hearing was the pitter-patter of squirrels in the ductworks. The ductwork had been infested with generations of squirrels while the home was empty. Thankfully they had never ventured down into the home itself, however all of the ductwork would need to be detachd and upgraded. That couldn’t happen until the ductwork was free of all living creatures, which was something none of us knew how to do. If both of us poisoned them or gassed them, then I just have ductworks clogged full of dead squirrels, which is not much better than what both of us have. We actually have no concern removing the ductwork and putting in the modern set ourselves, however both of us are clueless about how to clear them out! Anyone have pointers on how to get squirrels out of ductwork?

The best way to learn a trade is with a professor/apprentice relationship

Some things are l acquired from books, and some things need to be l acquired through experience.

However when you learn a trade, you need to do both, then you have to learn by doing, but also learn and study and learn as much as you can.

No matter what trade you want to follow, there is nothing more beneficial to the process than finding a professor. A professor can guide you through the practicality of the job, leading by example and giving you the experience you need to succeed. In the world of HVAC, the tech is consistently evolving, so the workers need to evolve just as hastily. My professor was an old, gruff guy who called himself Ox, and was the sole property owner of an HVAC repair shop. Ox didn’t do a lot of condo calls anymore, and was looking to pass on his HVAC wisdom and possibly his corporation to someone younger. I told him straight away that I was honored to work for him, and I would do whatever I could to learn the HVAC corporation his way. Ox was a guy of few words, and gave myself and others numerous pieces of advice for learning the HVAC trade – be on time, pay attention, and don’t ask to go home. I followed those numerous rules religiously, and over the course of months l acquired more and more about heating and cooling systems. After a while he gave myself and others an advance on our pay to sign up for the HVAC certification program, which at that point would be a cake walk for me!
