Getting air duct sealed

Last winter, I noticed some problems with the gas furnace.

It seemed to be running a lot more often plus longer than usual.

The gas furnace was struggling to keep up with the control unit setting plus the beach house felt chilly. There was a definite difference in temperature between the various rooms. I also had to dust plus vacuum more frequently. Because I am conscientious about air filter fluctuations plus scheduling professional repair in the fall, I was surprised by the complaints with the gas furnace. I called our typical Heating, Ventilation & A/C supplier plus explained our problems. He immediately suspected the air duct as the source of the problems. After completing a testing of airflow through the air duct, he determined that approximately 25% of the heated air was escaping through holes plus cracks at the seams. These same leaks were drawing in cold, dirty outdoor air plus spreading contaminants throughout the house. I had no idea how duct sealing could be completed separate from a major mess. The air duct is installed behind the walls plus ceilings. The supplier explained a fairly new technology called Aeroseal works to service leaks from the inside. He first sealed off the supply plus return registers. He then pumped highly pressurized air into the air duct. This air was laced with adhesive polymer particles that are non-toxic. As the air escaped through the holes in the ducts, those particles clung to the edges plus steadily built up to give an airslim seal. The whole process was completed within a couple of hours. It is guaranteed to last several years plus makes a large improvement in the comfort, cleanliness plus efficiency of the home.

Ductless heat pump provides solution for workshed

Building furniture started out as a interest. I invested into a set of tools plus started making stools, chairs, tables, bed frames plus dressers. I offered them to friends, neighbors plus family members for holidays plus birthday presents. The words spread plus I began getting orders from people I didn’t even know. My interest turned into a lucrative side-business. I needed to devote more time to our projects.I built myself a shed in the backyard where I can store our tools plus work on orders all year round. I outfitted the shed with electricity plus needed to figure out a way to handle temperature control. In our local area, the weather fluctuates a good deal. The winters are especially chilly plus snowy while summers are warm plus humid. I wanted a system that would give both heating plus cooling capacity. I was looking for something fairly incostly, compact plus energy efficient. I hoped to keep our operational costs satisfactory. After quite a bit of research, I settled on a ductless heat pump. The system consists of an outdoor compressor connected to an indoor air handler by way of a conduit. The replacement process required little more than a multiple-inch hold in an exterior wall to accommodate the conduit. The air handler is mounted up high on the wall, operates quietly plus offers control by way of a cordless remote. I can adjust temperature plus fan speed plus switch between heating plus cooling. I can even target airflow in different guidelines. The ductless heat pump is very fine at handling excess humidity plus filtering out air contaminants. I appreciate that I can beginning it up a few minutes before I head out to the shed plus it will give a perfectly comfortable work environment.

Old heating and cooling plan continues to operate

The two of us were able to afford a home situated right along the lake because it had been left vacant for quite a few years.

The previous owners had started and failed to finish several improvement projects. One of the bathrooms was completely torn out. The living room was missing a floor. Some of the windows were boarded up. Every appliance was severely outdated. The plumbing was corroded and leaking. My hubby and I are especially handy and love tackling large projects. The two of us were certainly relieved the electrical plan was up to code and the heating/cooling plan proved functional. The home is equipped with a packaged unit that is situated outside and provides both heating and cooling capability. It sends the conditioned air through air duct that runs inside the attic and delivers comfort by way of supply and return vents cut into the ceilings. The unit is enormous and unbeautiful. It’s rusted and certainly noisy. It frequently startles me when it starts up. The two of us expected to need to update it within the year. We’ve now lived in the home for nearly several years and the plan continues to operate. It definitely handles the extreme summer time heat and humidity. It struggles a bit in the winter. Fortunately, the temperature in our local area rarely drops below 40 degrees. On the coldest days, the plan sometimes freezes over. We’ve purchased a portable electric furnace to supplement. We’ve only had a single concern with the unit so far. I noticed warm air coming from the vents when it was set to cooling mode. I called for repairs, fully expecting to update the whole system. The worker found a small refrigerant leak. He told us the plan is too outdated to find updatement parts. He refilled and recharged the refrigerant and said to hope for the best. So far, that solution is holding up just fine.

Moving south and buying a home with a heat pump

After spending over fifty years dealing with the brutal frigid and excessive snow up north, my hubby and I decided to move south.

We’d had enough of temperatures down to disadvantage twenty-numerous degrees and dangerous wind chills.

The two of us were tired of shoveling, plowing and scraping ice. For more than half the year, both of us were trapped in the home and reliant on the furnace. Our bi-weekly heating bills added up to approximately 50% of our household energy consumption. By the end of the winter, the home would know horribly dry, stuffy and stale. It seemed to take forever for the weather to warm up enough to melt the snow. The Springtime and fall seasons were usually windy and rainy. The two of us were blessed to get 2 to several weeks of weather warm enough to open the windows and wear shorts. There was certainly little option to love outdoor activities. Then it would once again be time to schedule repair for the furnace, change the air filter, and get the snow shovel, boots and wool coats ready for another winter. My hubby and I were eager to head south and escape temperatures below freezing. The two of us chose a home with a heat pump that provides both heating and cooling. The two of us rarely need to run it in heating mode, but are genuinely thankful for cooling. Our modern location often sees temperatures in the high nineties. Although the heat and humidity are intense, we’re still happy both of us resituated. The two of us love sandals instead of boots and tank tops instead of sweaters. The heat pump handles the year round comfort of our home.

  • The previous owners had started plus failed to finish more than 2 improvement projects.

One of the powder rooms was completely torn out. The bedroom was missing a floor. Some of the windows were boarded up. Every appliance was severely old. The plumbing was corroded plus leaking. My fiance plus I are especially handy plus like tackling large projects. The two of us were truly relieved the electrical system was up to code plus the heating/cooling system proved functional. The new home is equipped with a packaged device that is located outside plus provides both heating plus cooling capability. It sends the conditioned air through ductwork that runs inside the attic plus delivers comfort by way of supply plus return vents cut into the ceilings. The device is enormous plus unbeautiful. It’s rusted plus truly noisy. It frequently startles myself and others when it starts up. The two of us expected to need to substitute it within the year. Window air conditioners work well

The two of us run our furnace for approximately several months of the year.

The temperature is below chilly the majority of the time plus often sub zero. The cost of heating has a tremendous impact on our household budget. It’s necessary to seal the new home tightly to minimize energy waste. Because of this, there is truly little natural ventilation. The indoor living space becomes overly dry, stuffy plus stale. The outdoor conditions keep us inside. The Wintertide creates a fantastic deal of work plus expense. We’ve needed to invest into an especially powerful furnace, four-wheel-drive vehicle plus a plow for the truck. The two of us devote time nearly every morning to shoveling snow away from the front step, the mailbox plus our vehicles. I even need to clear a path for the dog, because the snow accumulates in feet. The two of us wait a long time for the weather to warm up enough for the snow to melt. I am consistently upset for the morning when all of us can finally open the windows. The fresh air feels fantastic. With such short summers, our family spends as much time as possible outside. The two of us swim in the pool, lie in the sun, play in the yard, work in the gardens plus barbecue. The two of us like to ride bikes, play tennis plus take our kayaks to the lake. I have never felt the need to install central air conditioner. It seems like a large expense for little reward. I went to the local beach new home improvement store plus bought window air conditioners for each of the bedrooms. This solution was way cheaper plus easier. The units are especially compact plus lightweight. Installing them into the windows took myself and others just a few minutes. When the air conditioners aren’t in use, all of us store them in the attic. They are powerful enough to keep the bedrooms nice plus cool on warm plus muggy afternoons, plus they allow each family member to tailor the temperature to their personal preference.

Shipping container laundry room

It was quite cheap when you consider how much an addition was.

The previous homeowner had their washer and dryer in the outdoor shed. The shed was a distance away from the home and you had to walk in sand. I also am a big gym type of gal. Once I had all my equipment inside, there was no room for the washer and dryer. I wanted the machines inside my house but I didn’t have the room. I started looking into adorable home solutions. I found that you can get a shipping container and create the space however you want. It can be a bathroom, kitchen, another bedroom or a laundry room. I have a side door that used to lead to nothing. Now it leads to my laundry room. I take a single step outside and I am through a door in my laundry room. I have a washer and dryer side by side and a shelf to hold my liquid detergent, dryer sheets and stain removal. I have enough room to keep a laundry basket and a folding table. This setup is so great and convenient. Even if it rains I am under both roofs and protected. The shipping container could have been outfitted with heating and cooling but I didn’t see the point. I am barely in there, maybe 30 minutes a week. It was quite cheap when you consider how much an addition was. I also didn’t need to ask my husband to mess around with water hookups and installing a 220 line. It was a totally turnkey solution with this shipping container laundry room. Since you can’t see it from the road, I think I will keep it forever.

Modular kitchen while I wait for the addition

A lot of people look at me like I am crazy, but I do have a modular kitchen.

I have a shipping container right in my side lawn that serves as my kitchen.

I just didn’t have the space to make my home kitchen good enough. I need to put an addition on the house but I don’t have the money right now. So for now, a shipping container kitchen is the best I can do. I have to say, I kind of love that little kitchen. I like that all my stuff is separate from the house. I just keep a small fridge inside the house for my husband. All the stuff I cook with is in the modular kitchen. I have an oven, stove top, microwave, dishwasher and plenty of room to prep. I make dinner and it is like two steps outside the house to get into the kitchen for the meal. My husband and I frequently sit outside and eat now. Maybe once it gets cold I won’t like it as well. For right now I am not rushing the addition because I like being sectioned off. Currently my house only has room for a tiny kitchen. I would barely have room to prep and I couldn’t fit a dishwasher. No woman should have to go through this in her kitchen. So for right now this is the best I can do and I am loving it. My dream kitchen would be attached to the house and have acres of counter space in quartz and recessed lighting. I also want top of the line appliances. Right now I can barely afford a builder to create an addition.

Portable restroom solution after a hurricane

Every year my house gets hit by a hurricane.

It is just luck of the draw how badly I get hit. Some years I am just picking up branches and other years I am doing some remodeling. I got hit really bad recently. A large tree fell on my house. It managed to completely smoke my bathroom. I had to call a tree removal service, a roofer and a clean up crew. I then needed to hire a plumber to fix my bathroom. All these services take time and money. I only had one bathroom in my house too. I stayed in a hotel for tree removal and roofing. After that I realized it was too expensive to do this long term. Money wise it was actually smarter to get a portable shower and toilet. I am not talking about a porta potty either. I got a mobile bathroom solution delivered to my house. It is actually a shipping container that is set up like a real bathroom. I have a toilet, sink, hand dryer and shower. It is exactly what I need for my situation. I just pay a monthly rental fee on it. Once I am done the company will pick it up and I will be back in my house. It is nice that I can still stay at home. I am able to answer any questions my plumber has. We also had a problem that my new tub was on backorder for a month. Thankfully that bit of news wasn’t a problem due to my portable restroom solution.
