New HVAC system works even better than I thought it would

But the HVAC professional came through for me by introducing me to the ductless heat pump

So I was doing my best to simply save as much money redoing this house as I could. Paying the mortgage alone kind of forces that upon a person. Still, I had plenty of help. My brother and all his meathead friends were more than willing to jump in. Of course I promised to the foot the bill for all the pizza and beer involved. After years of being in apartment where I would sweat through the summer heat due to weak HVAC cooling, I was now a homeowner. And I did it on my own which also impresses me since it took me nearly a decade of saving to make the downpayment. I had a day job but I didn’t come home to that weak HVAC and hang out. After my real job, I went straight to my side hustle to make extra money. But all of that has finally paid off. We were getting along on the renovations and were close to ready to have me move out of the apartment with the so so heating and cooling. But then, we hit a heating and cooling snafu of our own. When the HVAC contractor came out to do the inspection, he found that the ductwork was just shot. So we had to pivot as I didn’t have the funds to suddenly rip out and replace the entire ductwork. But the HVAC professional came through for me by introducing me to the ductless heat pump. No ductwork necessary, obviously. I now have a ductless multi split and I’m super comfortable with all this quality heating and air.

Using ventilation dampers to fix problems with improperly designed ductwork

I try to take on challenges head-first as I get older and learn to have more patience with adversity.

It doesn’t help to freak out and waste energy that you need to discover a clever solution or answer to your problems.

When I purchased this old house, all my friends could see were issues that could all be addressed with simple renovations. You can replace windows and flooring as long as the roof isn’t caving in and you’re not finding water damage and mold in unforeseen places. Once it became clear that this place didn’t have any major issues like this, I happily paid for the deed and got to work making my upgrades. However, I realized that there were a few more issues that I hadn’t considered at first with getting this place livable. There were electrical repairs that I had to pay for, but the worst issue was with the heating, ventilation, and cooling system. The HVAC technician explained that the original company to install the ductwork did a poor job of designing it and putting it into place. Because of the lack of forethought, some rooms in the house were at different temperatures than others. Instead of getting all new ductwork, my HVAC technician said that he could install dampers to fix the problem much more economically. The dampers restrict airflow in critical areas of the ventilation system to increase airflow in other areas. This can get around poorly designed ductwork in a number of situations, but you’ll have to consult with your HVAC company to know for sure.

Don’t choke the air supply going into an HVAC condenser

I’m starting to regret hiring a landscaping company to work on my yard.

Ever since childhood I was responsible for at least half of the gardening work at my parent’s property. I planted trees, bushes, flowers, cacti, succulents, and even decorative palms. Mowing the grass and weeding around the foundation was part of my chore list as well. It wasn’t an issue for me because I had an early MP3 player at the time and loved to listen to as much music as I could get my hands on whenever I was doing chores outside. Despite occupying my time with music, I was told to be careful and stay mindful of my surroundings. Had I accidentally gashed the base of the HVAC condenser while using the weed whacker, I would have faced the consequences for my mistake. I figured that this landscaping company would hire people with enough decency to tell me when they damage my HVAC equipment with their weed whackers. I’m at a loss of what I should do in response to this frustrating situation. I took photos of the gashes at the base of my HVAC condenser and sent them to the owner of the landscaping. Although I wasn’t particularly surprised, I was shocked at how brazen that man was about denying any culpability on his employees’ part. That’s when I went to Google to leave a negative review, which triggered a flood of similar reviews from other dissatisfied customers who had similar issues with damage from lawn equipment. Afterward the owner tried to reach out to me about retracting my review if he could “make it right,” but I told him to kick rocks until he can’t feel his toes anymore.

Improper UV light installation in an air purifier can cause fire hazards

Neglecting proper safety precautions with some machines might seem trivial, especially if there’s no real fire hazard.

It’s dangerous to assume this mindset with anything that can overheat with improper use.

Even a basic oscillating fan can get dangerously hot if you use it repeatedly after it has become completely encased in a thick layer of dust. I clean all of my fans on a yearly basis for this particular reason, but it’s also a smart habit to form in the name of retaining indoor air quality. In the name of air quality we buy air purifiers but it’s easy to forget that they need proper maintenance to work for years to come. I have seen some negative reviews for air purifiers that I tend to like and wondered why. It seems that some people not only mishandle the fans inside, but the UV light needs to be installed properly. Usually there is a metal shield between the UV bulb and the wires coming out the back so the bright light can’t melt the plastic wire shielding. If the shielding melted it would cause a short in the wire and could start a fire. This happened to a few of the people who left negative reviews of this particular air purifier model. When I replaced the UV light in my air purifier, I was careful to put the metal shield between the bulb and the bulb’s wire. Hopefully I won’t run into any issues with the UV light in my trusty air purifier. It is a huge benefit in reducing allergens in my indoor air.

Believe it or not but a fireplace can be a source of carbon monoxide without proper care

My upbringing wasn’t as old fashioned as it was rustic.

We lived on a ranch in an extremely rural area of the northern midwest.

At the age of four I was taught how to ride a horse and within a year was going on solo rides. Although my siblings and I all attended public school with a good mix of students from different backgrounds, our home lives consisted of constant manual labor and hard work. It was normal for me to spend most of my time outside of school and homework largely working on the family’s farm and doing whatever I could in my limited capacities. Once I was old enough I was helping my father with chopping wood for our two wood stoves inside the house. This wood was our source of heat throughout the frigid winter season. Chopping wood for heating purposes isn’t an easy process. My dad would do all of the work with the chainsaw while I would swing the ax to split the blocks into smaller pieces of wood that could fit inside the wood stoves. I always wondered why we had carbon monoxide detectors despite lacking any gas appliances in our rural home. My dad told me that an improperly venting wood heating system generates unsafe levels of carbon monoxide. This is particularly worrisome if there is a considerable build-up of soot in the chimney, making regular chimney cleanings even more important. Since carbon monoxide is both colorless and odorless, you won’t even know that it’s there poisoning you unless you’re using detectors. That small electronic device could be your line against accidental death.

She put bubble gum in the air vent.

I sat down and asked if there was something I could help her with? She told me that the air vent blew her shirt up and she wondered if it would also blow a bubble

My daughter is quite precocious and she comes up with some wild ideas at times. I almost hate to see what is going to happen when she gets older. My wife and I will both be grey before we even turn forty. Last week, I had to punish her for trying to put the cat in the washing machine. She said she was dirty from all the dust the HVAC technician made when he cleaned the furnace. She wanted to give him a good tumble like mommy did with the laundry. This week, she must have been watching the HVAC tech when he cleaned the air vents. She told me that the warm air was blowing really good now. She liked how the warm air ballooned her shirt out when she stood over the air vent. I never thought this would give her any ideas other than to do it more often. I came home from work to find her patiently sitting by the air vent in the living room. I asked what she was doing and she simply said that she was waiting. I asked what she was waiting for me and she said I would see. When my daughter was quiet; there was trouble brewing. I sat down and asked if there was something I could help her with? She told me that the air vent blew her shirt up and she wondered if it would also blow a bubble. I panicked and ran over to the air vent. She had placed bubble gum over some of the air vent fins, in hopes of having the air vent blow a bubble.

Did you see the kitten?

We had gotten our daughter a kitten for her birthday.

It was pure white with a pink bow, just like she had asked. Last week, my wife asked if I had seen the kitten? I hadn’t seen the cat, but it didn’t bother me that it may have just up and left. I wasn’t a cat lover, but our daughter was. She cried for the next three days, as she worried that her kitty had died, or something had eaten it. Since the cat had never been out of the house, I was pretty sure nothing had eaten it. I had seen an occasional mouse in our house, but it wasn’t big enough to eat a small cat. When I said this, my daughter wailed in displeasure. My wife and I were on a mission to find a small white cat. She looked like a fluff ball and I couldn’t understand how she could be lost. I ended up going into the basement. I kept hearing some scuffling over by the furnace. I was sure it had to be the cat. I thought that she may have gotten downstairs when someone went down to do laundry. She would have found her way to the warmest area in the basement, which was the furnace. I looked all over, but I didn’t see anything, but a ball of old clothes that my wife had discarded. Leaving the clothing by the furnace wasn’t the smartest thing to do, so I picked them up to tell my wife where I found them. When the clothes moved, I jumped and screamed. Wrapped up in the clothing, was a small bundle of fur. The cat had found a place to snuggle where it was warm from the heat of the furnace.

Whatever happened to my wrench?

I had a small wrench that I knew I had when I was last working on the air conditioning.

I always did my own maintenance on the air conditioning unit, and I couldn’t understand where I would have put the wrench.

I looked outside to make sure I had left the wrench laying on or near the AC unit. I had already torn everything out of my toolbox, in an effort to find the wrench. I kept going over the entire day when I had done the maintenance on the AC unit. I remembered using my screwdriver and wrench to get inside the AC unit. I had removed the nuts so I could clean the fan blades. I had used the wrench to replace the fan. I remembered putting the wrench on the ground when I was putting everything back together. I just couldn’t remember what I had done with the wrench after that. I went over the same scenario every time, and I was at a loss when it came to where I had put the wrench when I closed up the air conditioning unit. I was getting ready to open the AC unit to see if it was inside when my young son asked what I was doing. I told him I had lost my wrench. He went into the house and brought out his toy tool kit. I thought he was going to offer me his wrench, but he gave me mine. I asked where he had found it, and he said he saw it sitting on the ground. He had washed it and kept the wrench for when I needed it again.

Hybrid HVAC system

My new son-in-law is a HVAC tech.

When my daughter got married, I swore I would never take advantage of her husband.

My new son-in-law is a HVAC tech, but I already had a HVAC company. I planned on always using my own HVAC technicians and not being one of those mother-in-laws who want free work done all the time. While my daughter was visiting last week, the air conditioning wasn’t working very well. She commented on how warm it was in the kitchen. I told her I called the HVAC company and they were to be there on the next day. She frowned and asked why I didn’t call and ask Paul to look at the AC unit? I reminded her that I promised to never be that type of mother-in-law. I was able to take care of my home without trying to interfere in their time. She got very angry with me and told me I was being ridiculous. Naturally, my response was to tell her I thought it was time to go home. I was still her mother and she was not going to disrespect me in my own home. She was the one who had told me she worried that having a husband who was a HVAC technician was going to be a problem with the family. I handed her her purse and held the door open. I felt guilty when she huffed out, but I had a HVAC company and a maintenance and repair agreement. Paul was already working, and he wanted to come home to his wife, and not to work on her mother’s air conditioning unit.

It’s snowing, and my furnace still hasn’t been maintained.

My husband was in a panic

I had been asking my husband to have the furnace serviced for almost three months, but he hadn’t found the time. I kept telling him that it would be snowing and we still won’t have the furnace prepared for winter. He would storm off and go into his man cave just to shut me up. Fortunately, I wasn’t afraid of him. I decided to take the furnace maintenance into my own hands and called the HVAC company a month ago. It was almost November and we often had snow by the end of October. I didn’t want to go into the winter wondering if the furnace was going to get us through the season. The HVAC tech showed up at the house, while my husband was at work. I was glad I had called him because there was a problem, and there needed to be some minor repairs done. He said the small repairs probably wouldn’t have been worrisome had they not been addressed immediately, but there was no sense in taking a chance. Since we had a maintenance and repair plan, I knew it was good to have everything done at that time, and it wouldn’t cost us anything extra. I never told my husband about having the maintenance done. It is now almost December and we have had our first major snowfall. My husband was in a panic. He told me it was snowing and the furnace still hadn’t been maintained. I simply told him it had been done thanks to me. He stormed off to his man cave.
