Different ways filthy air ducts can affect your comfort

HVAC ducts might skip your mind from time to time.

But, that can end up causing a huge dent on your budget and negatively affect the quality of air you breathe.

When the air conditioning system smells terrible, it might come as a shock to note the AC unit isn’t the issue. The randy smell is emanating from the air vents. One issue you might be facing is moisture build up which is pretty common. The water moisture in the air vents becomes a breeding place for scary microorganisms that contribute to the terrible smell filling your space. That’s what your AC unit keeps blowing into your home when you turn it on. Not only is the stench an uncomfortable thing to endure, but you can also exhibit health matters like headaches and wheezing that exacerbates asthma. Air vents manufactured using drywall and sheetrock based materials are vulnerable to awful stinks. Only metal ducts are usually safe from this concern. Poor air quality is yet another ductwork-related issue. When the air vets are filled with moisture, this compromises the effectiveness of the AC system. It gives outdoor pollutants a chance to enter your home like dust, pesticides, smoke, and other allergens. This makes it hard to breathe and enjoy any level of comfort. Air vents that are leaking tend to reduce the amount of conditioned air you receive. Your home will lose about 20% of the air passing through the ductwork. So make sure an AC expert checks the ductwork for leaks during HVAC maintenance. Once he/she fixes the leaks, you enjoy more conditioned air. Also, the results will be reflected in your monthly electricity bill which will be lower than usual. More so, there’s no more need to worry about outdoor pollutants penetrating the sanctity of your home.

Why you need regular professional duct cleaning

When was the last time you called in an HVAC expert to clean the air ducts? Dirty air vents can cause you bigger problems later on and compromise the quality of air in your home.

If the aircon in your home is emitting bad aromas, you might be surprised to learn the stench isn’t originating from the equipment itself.

Rather the foul smell is from the vents. Air vents tend to collect moisture which builds up over time. That isn’t a good situation since it can become a breeding ground for numerous pesky and harmful things like mold. Those peculiar aromas start to become unavoidable after some time! Not only is the stench uncomfortable to experience, but you can also experience health issues like asthma which get worse and worse. The most vulnerable air vents are those made using certain materials like carbon and drywall. Metal is exempt from this air vent issue . The excess moisture not only destroys air quality but also blows lots of allergens and microorganisms into your home. Outdoor pollutants flow into the HVAC and enter your home. These include smoke, dirt, pollen, cleaning fluid, and insecticides that compromise the quality of air and harm the health of you and your family. Also watch out for leaking air vents since these reduce the amount of conditioned air you receive and lower comfort levels. The reduction can be up to 20% so make sure you have an AC technician check the vents for leaks and seal them. Fixing this means you have more good quality air in your home. The HVAC unit will deliver a comfortable temperature efficiently which is reflected in your energy consumption rate. When the AC expert fixes the elaks, you’re also safe from outdoor pollutants that compromise indoor air quality.

The importance of cleaning air ducts

Many people take air vents and ventilation systems lightly.

But , poorly set up or filthy ducts that are not maintained can affect your finances and cause poor indoor air quality.

If your central heating and cooling system stinks, you might be surprised to discover the odor is not coming from the AC itself. It’s coming from the air vents as a result of moisture accumulation. It’s a common occurrence that many overlook. The presence of moisture creates a breeding ground for lots of harmful microorganisms including mildew. After some time, the build up is too much that you can no longer stand the stench wafting through your home. You can also experience health conditions such as respiratory problems that get worse with time. Ducts set up using drywall, sheetrock, or carbon based materials are prone to such situations. Metal ducts are safe from this problem. Besides bad odor, poor air quality is another air vent issue to tackle. When a duct has plenty of moisture, mold and other allergens grow and disrupt indoor air quality.Outdoor pollutants can also get into your system like smog, dust, pollen, cleaning fluid, pet dander and herbicides compromising your air quality. Leaks in air vents is yet another matter that affects the conditioned air. The air won’t reach the portion of your lake house where you need it. On average, a property loses more than 20% of the air that flows through its vents. The way to fix this issue is to check your vents for leaks and get them sealed. Once you get the vents fixed for leaks, you will lose less heat or cool air. In the end, the HVAC system will deliver a comfortable temperature without much strain and reduce the size of your biweekly energy bills. Calling an AC technician to fix the leaks can prevent outdoor pollutants entering your dwelling through the vents.

Having cool air in your home while you exercise can keep you safe

Many people have turned to at home exercising when the pandemic hit, even though most gyms and exercise facilities are back open now, the majority of people like working out at home and continue to do so.

I personally like to work out at home because I don’t have to worry about other people using equipment or crowds when I exercise. It is very important to turn the a/c on while you are working out at home. If you have ever been to a gym, you have probably noticed that the thermostat is set to a low temperature at all times, and the reason the thermostat is set to such a low temperature is to protect the members at the gym. When you exercise, your body temperature naturally increases. If the gym was not set to a cool temperature, people would pass out from heat exhaustion left and right. The same concept should apply for your at home workout. Even if you think you do not need the a/c on because it is not hot outside, you should still turn it on to be safe. In addition to protecting your body, having an air conditioned home may help motivate you to work out. If your new home is hot, you will be more likely to want to lay down on the couch instead of lifting weights. If you are concerned about spending too much money on your electric bill, you could invest in a smart thermostat and program it to turn on when you know you will do your workouts. Air conditioning can help you stay fit at home.

Turning on the air conditioner at different temperatures

Everyone is different as far as what temperature makes them the most comfortable, and comfort with temperature also differs with indoor and outdoor temperatures, but for example, someone may be comfortable with 85 degrees outside, but would be super uncomfortable with the same temperature inside, and I asked some friends to see what temperature makes them turn their air conditioners on in the Summer, but the first friend I asked is Paul, paul lives in the south, where it is notoriously warm and humid, even before the Summer months.

  • Paul said that as soon as it hits 75 degrees, his central air is turned on in his home, however he explained that it is more the humidity than the heat that motivates him to turn on his air conditioner.

Paul does not want his home getting that humid, moldy, uncomfortable feeling. He runs his central air until it cools down in the winter which does not always happen where he lives. I asked my friend Eri, who lives up north! Eri does not have a central air conditioner, because it is not necessary where she lives. Instead, she has two window air conditioner units- one in her home office and one in the bedroom. Eri said that she will usually turn on her window air conditioner units when it gets up to 85 degrees or when it feels humid. It is possible for her to get comfort most of the Summer from windows being open and using a fan, instead of spending money on an air conditioner. It is absolutely interesting how in odd parts of the country, people have different opinions on when they know it is necessary to use their air conditioner.
