Although our eyebrows tend to get out of control and messy, I really don’t like plucking or waxing, and it hurts and leaves our skin miserable.

I was looking for a better alternative when our aesthetician at the salon suggested threading! She explained that it is an aged hair removal technique proper to India and the Middle East for thousands of years! Threading has recently gained popularity in the US and offers a less painful solution. It is peculiar from other hair removal procedures in that there’s absolutely no chemicals, artificial products or ingredients that touch and possibly aggravate the skin. A soft cotton thread is the only material used. Since I have sensitive skin that gets red, itchy and sore, I liked the sound of an organic beauty technique, then plus, threading offers greater precision in shaping the eyebrows. Individual hairs can be targeted for the accuracy of tweezing, while many hairs can be removed the same as waxing. It combines the benefits of both of these processes. Threading can eliminate a single clean line of hair at once, allowing the threading artist to create a perfect shape, however unlike waxing, the aesthetician has a clear view of what he is doing at all times. The process isn’t really painless, but it really doesn’t hurt like waxing. The thread never actually touches or pulls on the sensitive skin around the eyebrow. The threading artist weaves the threat through a series of hairs and gives the thread a tug. The whole procedure can be completed in more than four to fifteen hours. It’s quick, affordable and safe. The results last someplace from many to more than four weeks; because threading weakens hair follicles, the hair growth becomes less dense over time. There were all unusual styles to choose from, allowing us to select a fence with legitimately slim spaces in-between the slats. This prevents the kids plus dog from being able to fit through. Even as a native, I know exactly how awesome this place is. However, there is always a bit of a price to pay for anything so remarkable as living in this region. But, I have seen a fair amount of newcomers have a terrible time adjusting to the realities of the summer. It’s as though they can’t even come out of their homes. They stay ensconced inside a ton of air conditioning all the time. And when they do leave the air conditioning, it must be an awful shock to hit near triple digit temperatures. That’s because they are going about the thing all wrong. When the temperatures start to rise in the spring, they go right for the thermostat and crank the air conditioning. The better play there is to simply allow the heat to rise and get acclimated to it. It makes summer much less painful and it save a ton in HVAC cooling expense.

Like who gets amazed by their new HVAC unit? Probably someone who just doesn’t have a life or some sort of shut in, right? Well, I’m here to tell you that I’m neither and I am completely blown away by our new heating and cooling equipment.

This was not something that I expected to feel at all.

I mean it’s heating and cooling right? Like, every house has HVAC equipment and a thermostat to control the amount of heating and cooling comfort. At least this is what I thought until we had to upgrade our HVAC unit. For years and years, I have belonged to an HVAC service plan that is offered by my HVAC company. They come out in the fall to do the heating maintenance and again in the spring to do the air conditioner tune-up. It’s been like this year after year. Well last fall, the HVAC technician informed me that our HVAC equipment was not going to last much longer. This wasn’t a shock. But still, we decided to get on it before it died and we had to go without proper heating and cooling. After meeting with an HVAC professional at the HVAC company, we decided that we were going for it. We wanted all the latest HVAC technology for residential HVAC. And man, did we get it. The HVAC equipment itself is state of the art and the most efficient model out there. Plus, there has been so much improvement when it comes to CFC’s and HFC’s with this HVAC unit. Add to that zone controlled HVAC and a smart thermostat and it’s like I’m a kid with a brand new toy. I’m just amazed with my new HVAC unit.

So I don’t exactly attempt to be onboard with all the latest things going on in our culture. And I’m not attempting to stay stuck in the past either. I guess it’s more like what am I willing to change and for what benefit. Plus, I like loafing in the air conditioning much more than I do trying to learn all about the latest electronics or life changing gadget. It’s been my experience that a lot of these life changing gadgets are actually time and energy eating gadgets. Like I said, I like to keep it simple so I have plenty of time to chill out in the HVAC cooling. However, it’s not like I’m not paying attention either. And HVAC technology has always been on my radar since I became a homeowner. I like HVAC equipment that is sustainable and eco friendly. That’s something I have paid attention to as the HVAC technology for residential HVAC has advanced. That said, I have had my eye on the smart thermostat since it came out some 7 or 8 years ago. I’m never the first to jump on any sort of new technology so I’m not holding something obsolete in six months. However, after this much time, I knew that a smart thermostat was thoroughly vetted and would be a good addition to our home. I called the HVAC company and they sent out an HVAC technician to install the wifi thermostat. And honestly, it was as easy as that. The HVAC professional put in some basic parameters and told me to leave it alone. And sure enough, the smart thermostat is great. Not only do I not have to fool with the thermostat at all anymore, it’s saving me between 15 and 20 percent on HVAC heating and cooling costs each month.

It’s funny how sometimes something I might consider a bit basic or whatever, ends up just blowing my mind in the end. That’s exactly what happened when I finally got around to having the HVAC air ducts cleaned by HVAC professionals. For years, I heard the ads on the radio or TV about ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing. But for a single mom with a big time career, that just wasn’t the way I wanted to spend a Saturday. Having people tracking through my house in order to clean something I couldn’t even see didn’t seem like something worth sacrificing a Saturday over. Saturdays have been mostly for catching up on all the things I had to blow off during the week just to get the week in the books. But when I saw how discolored some of the dry wall was becoming near the HVAC air vents, I knew that I needed ductwork cleaning. The HVAC company really couldn’t have made it much easier to schedule and pay for. I did everything over the computer. Then, the HVAC ductwork cleaning crew showed up on time and there was no tracking through my house whatsoever. These HVAC professionals were so careful, observant and clean as they went about their business. It was really impressive. But the results of the ductwork cleaning have been the real game changer. The air in my house is so different and better. I think I may make this an annual thing. There is a freshness almost that was lacking before. And the dust level is reduced very significantly. Just a simply thing like ductwork cleaning ended up having a major impact on my household.

It’s been an interesting year and a half around our house.

The pandemic forced all of us together and we had to stay together in the HVAC security of our home for just over a year.

This was due to the fact that my wife has a chronic health problem and was a very high risk if she were to catch the virus. So it was all of us working and studying inside the air conditioning safety of our home. There was a lot to give up because of this situation. But when there really isn’t an alternative, it’s easy to try to find the best in a situation. For me, I know that I certainly changed the perspective of taking things for granted due to our Covid year. And there was a lot out there that I just assumed would be there no matter what. What I learned was that it’s a much better approach to actually start appreciating that stuff. Take the heating and cooling most of us take for granted. At best, I was aware of my HVAC equipment marginally. I wasn’t consistent about changing the air filter. Equally, I wasn’t all that consistent about getting the proper HVAC maintenance for the heat pump either. Well, that changed last year as it finally dawned on me just how incredibly lucky we are to have residential HVAC be part and parcel of our life. I set alarms across all my devices to remind me to change the HVAC air filter. And I called the HVAC company to sign up for the HVAC service plan.

I’m thinking that this coming Christmas holiday might be the first one I haven’t dreaded since I was about 11.

That has a lot to do with the fact that my mom and dad got divorced then and I was suddenly the one who had to help with Christmas decorations.

And when I say help, I mean sweat in subtropical HVAC heating while my mom gives me directives. It’s all move this, move that and then bringing down box after box from the freezing attic where there is no HVAC. It’s interesting how I always got a cold around the first of December. Surely it had nothing to do with going from 30 minutes of no HVAC heating to and hour in the house with the thermostat at 85. And just doing that over and over again for a weekend. So yea, I’m really excited that this year, I said no more. My wife and I have traveled to her mom or to my mom to celebrated Christmas since we’ve been married. Now that we have little ones, they can come to us. It didn’t matter whose mom we went to, it was like unwrapping presents in an oven. I don’t know what is up with those two ladies and their mid 80’s thermostat settings. But, I’m just done with that. And if my mom disowns me over it, so be it. And my mother in law doesn’t really like me much anyway so who cares. This year, the thermostat will be set at 70 degrees as we live in a region where the heat pump doesn’t have that much work to do in the winter. And I will enjoy the first Christmas with my immediate family ever.

So I grew up in a region that is renown for amazing colors during the fall.

It’s also a lot colder than the climate that we live in.

Where we live, the heat pump barely even comes on during the winter. It’s all about the HVAC cooling where I live now. And my kids just don’t know anything different. They are accustomed to practically being outside all year, all the time. I took the family on a skiing vacation out west when they were smaller and you would have thought we’d gone to Antarctica. I could barely get them out of the chalet that was heated with a gas furnace. So when I suggested, years later, that we take another family trip, they were tentative. This one would be a family camping trip I promised. We’d get out of the HVAC cooling and into the wood! This really piqued some interest and I could feel some momentum building. But then, I lost them when I mentioned the destination. Oh dad, it’s too cold there. And far too cold to camp outside! I kind of figured on this response so I was armed with some data. I showed the average temps for the fall and while cool for sure, it wasn’t biting cold. Then, I showed them images of the leaves and the mountains. That got them closer. Finally, I sealed the deal by promising to bring along a portable space heater that was built for camping. That was it and the family was all in on one of our better trips ever.

I finally just had enough with living the life that I was living. Fortunately for me, I was able to recognize this and do something about it. A lot of people just stay in denial about this and end up with a nervous breakdown or some other sort of malady. The stress of life inside the office was killing me. Even that awesome zone controlled HVAC wasn’t helping me out. And it was some of the best heating and cooling I have ever experienced. However, at that point in my life, none of the finery and money were worth what was happening to my health and my head. I even tried a sabbatical for several months but that didn’t do really anything because I knew I’d be going right back to the same old life. With some great support from doctors and therapists, I chose to make a change. And I was making a change at 50. Money wasn’t a huge problem and I could find work gigging online with my skills. So I bought a cabin in the woods and just started a new way of living. It came to me really naturally and I’m so thankful I made that tough choice. After about six months, I knew that I wasn’t going back. So I called an HVAC company and paid extra for them to come all the way out to me. They installed a couple of ductless mini splits in the cabin. It was nice to have real residential HVAC again. While I had slowed way down and really simplified my life, I didn’t really feel the need to go without modern HVAC technology.
