Giving yoga a try

I am not the most open-minded guy you will ever find, but I am trying.

  • Having to share a lockdown with a new girlfriend for eighteen months really tests a relationship.

In this case I found that after all the bickering was over, we really loved each other and wanted to be in each others lives. After that I tried to become more open minded and include myself in different parts of her life. She is very much into yoga, and that was something I always scoffed at doing before but now I wanted to try it. For someone like me it takes some getting used to, and yoga poses can feel silly at first. My girlfriend suggested that I try doing some yoga alone, to see if it made me feel less silly if no one was watching. She put one of her regular yoga classes on the TV and left the room so I could spend an hour finding out if I liked it. Although I did indeed feel silly at first, once my muscles relaxed and my body opened up, I felt myself enjoying the various yoga poses. By the end of the yoga session I felt drained, and yet rejuvenated, and I told my girlfriend I would start doing yoga with her regularly. She is really happy that I am sharing her interest in yoga, but it also means she thinks she can convince me to stop eating meat. Yoga is one thing, but giving up cheeseburgers is not something I think I can deal with!

A better balance of exercise, nutrition, and beer

It was easy for me to blame my belly on the beer.

I wasn’t fat, I told myself, I just had a “dad bod” from all the beers I drank.

Otherwise I was in great shape! Then one day I tried to go for a jog, to prove that I could do it, and I didn’t make it a quarter mile. I turned around and slowly walked back home, thinking about making some different choices. Drinking beer is great, but when you start drinking it at 9am and don’t stop until you go to bed at night, then you might have a problem. I started a workout program the next week, and started tapering off my alcohol consumption at the same time. I knew that quitting cold turkey would not work for me, so my plan was to wear myself out with exercise during the heat of the day. All the exercise would tire me out so much that come the evening I would fall asleep before I could get too drunk. For the first three days, this plan worked out pretty well, and after an intense workout program during the day I would only have two or three beers before crashing. I realized that with a better balance of exercise and nutrition, I would never have to give up drinking beer. Of course, I was done drinking a case in a day, but the exercise and good sleep made me feel so energetic I no longer wanted to spend all day drinking. I look better, I feel better, and I still enjoy my brew.

I used to blame pot for my weight problem.

It was because I smoked so much that I had no motivation, that’s what I told myself.

I ate so much because I always had the munchies, and was always so bored. Once again, I was blaming the pot, when I should have been looking at my own life choices. I would literally wake up, smoke marijuana all day long, and then bemoan the fact that my life was going nowhere. Finally I woke up and realized that the problem wasn’t pot, the problem was me. I still smoke pot every day, but now I exercise every day as well, and hit the gym three times a week. My first step was taking the budget for a month of marijuana, and spending it on a six month gym membership. That was definitely the hardest step, because I was sacrificing my greatest source of fun to start a workout program. Without making a sacrifice, I would have never started hitting the gym so hard, but for that first month I had no other way to blow off steam! Smoking pot was my one big vice, and without it I had a ton of free time that I spent doing weight lifting, cross fit, and even a few yoga classes to help with my stress. A few weeks later I started smoking again, but in far less quantity, and I never let it disrupt my established workout program. I am in better shape, I have more energy, I sleep better, and I still get to enjoy my weed.

Working out is good for the body and the soul

Believe it or not — Although I am now a successful law with a practice all my own, I could not have gotten here without football.

I knew I wanted to get into law when I was a teenager, but I was smart enough to know my family could never afford law school.

I could earn scholarships based on grades, but those might not be enough either. I knew that if I played football, and was good at it, I would earn a lot more scholarships and opportunities to get the education I wanted. That very week I started hitting the gym every single day, and after a few weeks I was ready to talk to the coach about joining the team. He knew I wasn’t any good at sports, but he also knew I was committed to the gym and to strength training so he put me on the team. For the next seven years I played football, first at high school then at the state university, and I would always hit the gym religiously, six days a week. If I ever missed a day of weight lifting, I would double down the next day and get in twice the reps. Exercise and strength training kept me a force to be reckoned with on the gridiron, but it also helped me retain my laser focus on my goals. Once I had graduated and I had my degree, I never once considered giving up my exercise routine. It might have started as a means to an end, but I feel my workout program has made me a more successful person.

My first time trying yoga

There is no doubt that I am a bad influence in our relationship.

My girlfriend Babs is a little angel, and I am the little devil standing on her shoulder whispering bad advice in her ear.

Babs is a dynamo, and she is so good for me in so many ways. Most of all she puts up with my crap, and I know I can be a lot to put up with sometimes. She is a vegetarian, and while I still enjoy meat, I am trying to learn to appreciate her kind of food. She wants me to start doing her workout sessions with her, but that I am not so sure about. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching her do yoga poses, but I am still not sure about trying it myself. She told me that she really wanted me to try yoga, and that I should do a session alone, just to see how it felt. She turned on one of her favorite yoga classes on Youtube and left the room, and you know I locked the door behind her! It only took about ten minutes and I didn’t feel silly laying on the floor contorting my body any longer, because the yoga stretches were having an effect on me. I felt my muscles tighten and relax, and I felt my body open up in response to the series of intricate yoga poses. By the end of a 45 minute long yoga session, my body felt as worn out and limp as a wet noodle, and I realized that I had enjoyed the exercise!

A humble home gym

If you build it, they will come. I actually forget what movie that is from, something about baseball, but everyone knows the quote. It was floating around in my head a couple of years ago, right when the COVID lockdown was starting out. I got turfed from my job, and was looking at a few months in quarantine at home, so I decided to finally start work on a project I had been pondering for years. I had the space, and the tools, but I could never seem to find the time. Now I had nothing but free time on my hands, so I started building my own home gym. Not just any home gym, in the corner of a spare bedroom, but converting a free-standing two car garage into a real gym. I could have an area for weight lifting, another area for the various workout machines and pieces of equipment like the two treadmills. It turns out that deciding the arrangement of the workout areas was the least of my concerns, because a gym needs a lot of underlying components. For example, when you are weight lifting do you ever think about the structural integrity of the floor beneath you? That’s the sort of thing I had to worry about in my gym. As well as the power, the HVAC system, and the other things any gym needs to be a safe and healthy place to exercise. All I know is that in another month I will be done with the work, and I can spread the word and see if anyone wants to use my gym.
