I couldn’t tell you how many times I have suffered driving to and from work. It wasn’t only the lengthy commute that really got to me, but it was also the fact that my car never had A/C. I always thought about just taking my car to the shop to get the air conditioning fixed, but then I was always worried that it was going to be way too expensive. Also, I didn’t want them to find a bunch of stuff that they thought I should have fixed. I didn’t want to pay a small fortune on this car that wasn’t anything too impressive in the first place. So I went numerous years just dying on the highway in the summer without any A/C at all. I would crank the radio and roll the windows down. Sometimes I didn’t mind just having the windows down, but on the really hot days it was unbearable at times. Eventually a friend was asking me why I didn’t get the A/C fixed in my car and so I told him. He laughed and said he could fix the A/C for me. I was skeptical and then he proved it to me. He took me to an auto parts store where he picked up some type of spray can with some adapters on it. He showed me how to hook up the can to the A/C compressor and he had me refill the coolant. It was unbelievably easy and it didn’t take that long to do. Then we got back on the road and he had me turn on the A/C system and I was in disbelief when the air conditioner was blowing ice-cold air!

I actually thought I had enemies at the office before, but now I suppose I really kicked the hornet’s nest.

• It was all about the temperature control settings in the office.

At first I thought it was a good thing that people were permitted to adjust the temperature control settings. It was a fairly civil thing at first and people were able to get along fine. Eventually, people were frustrated about not feeling perfectly comfortable and they would adjust the temperature control settings like crazy. Nobody could ever agree on the right temperature control settings. I eventually had a talk with my boss about this problem and he agreed that we should do something about it. I suggested to him that he invest in a smart thermostat which would allow him to put a pin code on there so nobody could adjust the temperature control settings except for him. When he learned that he would also be able to adjust the temperature control settings remotely, he really was smiling and loving the sound of having a smart thermostat. He even allowed me to make the announcement to the group that moving forward the temperature control settings were going to be set at 71 degrees in the summer and 69 degrees in the winter. The office has always had a great heating system so I didn’t mind that temperature too much. It’s just that when I told everybody what was going on, a lot of people were suddenly angry with me. However, there are people who see why I helped do this and they are appreciative.

This might sound strange to some people, but I still host tea parties for my loved ones who have passed away.

• I have a few in my family who have died in recent years and we always carried on the tradition of having tea parties in our home.

We would always set the temperature control settings to a certain level and get the fire going in the fireplace. We would all have the tea brewing regularly while we would all enjoy our tea while chatting around the fireplace. I loved how my mother would bring little treats for everybody and my aunt would always manage to bring some alcohol. It was always a wonderful and memorable experience amongst my loved ones. Now, everybody in my circle has passed away which only leaves me. Instead of being depressed and stopping the tradition of celebrating with tea parties, I kept that tradition moving on. While I have done this on my own for numerous years, my grandkids have now reached the age where they are able to enjoy the tea parties. Perhaps it will be such a fantastic experience for them that they will carry on this marvelous family tradition with their own families one day. Whether they keep the tradition going or not, it’s still always a grand experience when you have a fireplace to relax in front of with loved ones. Eventually, I will have a ductless mini split installed in my home, to help me feel a little more comfortable. I can’t always split enough wood for the fireplace these days.

I am excited to have some awesome new HVAC technology in my home.

But, I guess I’m about 5 years behind the curve if I am to be honest.

Still, I love the fact that managing the HVAC just got a whole lot easier thanks to this thermostat upgrade. And it’s a pretty big deal for me since I am always behind on technology. I have a hard enough time trying to just stay current in my job. However, the HVAC smart thermostat has been awesome. I have been quite pleased by how the smart thermostat has precisely managed our HVAC. We’ve had the HVAC thermostat for a few months now. The HVAC guy who put it in told me not to fool with it too much. He said it’s best to just let the thermostat learn our patterns. That was good enough for me. I mean their is a reason those techs are professionals. The results thus far are very impressive. When the house is empty during the day, the thermostat now allows the temperature inside the house to rise. This way the HVAC is having to work a whole lot less which is saving me a lot of HVAC energy that would otherwise be wasted. Yet, I have never come home to anything but a perfectly comfortable and cool house after work. It really is sort of freaky how tuned in the smart thermostat is to our behaviors. Regardless, I am loving the HVAC savings and not having to fool with the thermostat setting.

Replacing most of the appliances in my house was not something that I was all that excited about. My wife on the other hand, she was thrilled. That wonderful woman had been waiting years to get these household upgrades. She did all the research and new exactly what she wanted when it came to all those new appliances. It was up to me to do the research on the one appliance that I was assigned. And that was the HVAC system. When we bought our home, we bought into a place that was new but was part of a plan. So we didn’t actually build it or have a say in what the appliances would be. My wife went along with the idea because the price was so good. However, I promised her down the road that we would upgrade the appliances as they aged. Well, it’s been almost 15 years and we still love the house so the upgrades are on. The HVAC system was not the best just like all of the other appliances. It did okay but it was definitely not the top quality unit. However, I made sure that it was maintained on an annual basis. This helped keep the repairs to a minimum. But, like the other appliances, it was not built for the long haul. I got some help from an HVAC contractor. He was instrumental in helping me pick the right model for our needs. And he also made sure that it would fit the volume of our house and our ductwork. It’s pretty amazing to have all this new stuff, it almost feels like we got a new house without having to move.

I recently upgraded my HVAC to sell my house.

This was something that I had to do given the comps around us.

However, the HVAC was still very much getting it done. Initially when the realtor suggested an HVAC upgrade, I was quite hesitant. I knew how good that thing was and that it would be good for perhaps a decade longer. However, once the realtor showed me the data, it was obvious that to get our price we would have to upgrade the HVAC. Still, it left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. The reason being that I made certain that the HVAC was maintained on a semi annual basis. This was not hit or miss in any way. The HVAC was inspected and serviced each fall and each spring. I viewed HVAC maintenance as an investment. I had plenty of friends and neighbors act as though I was crazy to spend that sort of money. But the proof is clearly evident. While it was not a top of the line HVAC, it went almost 20 years without a single repair. And if we weren’t selling the house, I know that HVAC would have gone another decade before it had to be replaced. I just hope the new owner of this house will take as good care of this new HVAC as I did the old one. But I know that the next place we buy, I will be getting a newer, more efficient HVAC. That will be nice. I like the idea of saving more on HVAC costs. Yet I’ll for sure stick with the semi annual HVAC maintenance. It’s an investment afterall.

It may seem a bit absurd that I am already considering my plan of attach when it comes to saving on the HVAC cooling.

It’s still winter for crying out loud.

Well, indeed that is a fact. However, in our region it’s never too early to be sure that the HVAC savings strategy is set. We deal with a whole lot of heat and humidity in this part of the country. The folks up north are dealing with all that cold and snow right now by cranking the HVAC heating method. We’re sort of the opposite. The winter is a time to take a breath and enjoy the absence of the deep heat. Sure, the heat pump might kick on a few times when we have a cold snap. But it’s the summer heat and humidity that are the real focus when it comes to weather around here. I start early in my preparations by having the HVAC tech come out to inspect and service the HVAC unit. That way I know it will be in top form and at its most efficient. Then, it’s pretty simple. I make sure the house is sealed up tight. That means replacing any worn weather stripping and making sure there are no cracks or gaps to let cool air out and warm air in. Then once the heat settles in, it’s all about sticking to the HVAC setting limits. That’s where the real money is saved on the HVAC. If you can avoid letting the inside temps be more than 15 degrees cooler than outside, you have a winning formula for HVAC savings.

I have never had such a disaster of a day before. I really hope that my luck turns around after this unfortunate experience, because I am at my wits ends today. The day started off on the wrong foot when I woke up and immediately stepped in dog vomit. Then, I sat down to get some work done… And realized that it was mysteriously cold in my house. It felt like the furnace was not running at all. There was cold air all around me and even colder air passing through every window pane. I messed around with the thermostat for a while, but I could not get the heating system to turn on. That’s when I decided I needed to cancel my work for the morning and attempt to call a local heating, cooling, and ventilation repair dealership. When the air quality control technician arrived at my house he was several hours late. I had already wasted a lot of my time waiting for the HVAC technician and trying not to freeze. Then, the heating, cooling, and ventilation worker began inspecting my furnace… But unfortunately he could not finish. Halfway through, he realized that the furnace was going to need a part from the HVAC repair shop. My air quality control specialist hopped back in the HVAC work truck and promised to return in 10 minutes. He never came back. Apparently, my heating, cooling, and air quality control technician got into a car accident on his way to the dealership. My furnace never got repaired, I never got back to work, and I wound up with duplicate HVAC repair charges after I had to call another heating and cooling company for emergency help.

Sometimes I think that my husband and I have no right being together. To be honest, I don’t think we have any right being with anyone else, either. Both of us are kind of impulsive and reactive human beings. If you’re not aware, this can make relationships extremely difficult. Neither one of us is very skilled in conflict de-escalation or seeing things logically when we’re upset. It turns out, we are both so easily upset that we have been angry at each other for no reason for the past three years. You see, about 3 years ago we decided to install a gas powered fireplace in our living room to cut down on heating costs. Since we spend the majority of our time in the living room, we didn’t need to pay for a central heating system to evenly circulate high quality indoor air throughout the entire house. We just needed to provide warm, heated air in the one area that we were actually occupying. This is when we invested in a small gas powered fireplace which we both absolutely love. The little heating device does an excellent job of regulating our indoor air temperature for a very low cost. However, we were repeatedly getting into fights about the fireplace. It seemed obvious that every time one of us would turn on the heating device, the other party would inevitably turn off the fireplace without asking if that was okay. Over and over again, we ran into the same conflict as we battled over the fireplace utilization. And then… One day we realized that we were wrong. Neither one of us was turning off the fireplace to spite the other human. In fact, the fireplace had a timer option that apparently got turned on years ago… the heating system was turning itself off every 4 hours.

However, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

You see, for the past 6 months my temperature control devices have been taking a turn for the worst. They have all been making strange sounds and my indoor air temperature has been fluctuating with uneven hot and cold patches more often than I would like to admit. However, my HVAC technician has warned me that I actually need to replace my furnace and air conditioner sooner rather than later. I have mentioned how stressful this air quality control issue has become several times on my podcast. My listeners are very sympathetic and they often write supportive words to me, wishing me all the best with my heating and cooling drama. I truly appreciate all of the love, care, and support that they offer… But I would also accept a few dollars for my professional central heating, cooling, and air quality control system installation replacement.
