It was a relatively spine-chilling experience when the police came to our door with our son! He was basically at a large party drinking while he was underage.

We had a stern talk to make sure he knew the risks of alcohol and how it wasn’t a positive thing to be partying in such a way with delinquents. We basically said it could also lead to other drugs and that was something we definitely didn’t want him getting into. While we were totally being serious, all he could talk about was the uncomfortable temperature control settings that he had to deal with in the police cruiser. He said those officers were easily cranking the air conditioning appliance so that he would not be comfortable in the back, something like cruel and unrespected punishment. We totally paused for a moment and I asked him if he was on drugs at that very moment. He said he wasn’t, although he might have been drunk! Oh, he was drunk without a doubt and we decided to ground him for a long time so that he would learn his lesson. Honestly overall, our kid is a great kid and he has aspirations of being an HVAC professional. He will never be successful in life if he ends up in jail though for doing such things like drinking and driving. Fortunately he was smart enough not to do something incredibly stupid like that, but we honestly don’t want to see it happen down the road. He basically ended up cranking the air conditioning appliance in his room and sleeping it off and we spoke again in the morning hours with pancakes and bacon.

I remember when I first started seeing the ads for ductless heating and cooling.

Initially, I just couldn’t believe that something that compact and hanging on a wall could actually produce any sort of real quality heating and air.

So of course, based on this dumb perception, I completely discounted a whole new phase in residential HVAC. This stuck with me for a some time and I still didn’t see how ductless heat pumps could really be a viable alternative to something like a central air conditioning system. Again, I was just not getting it. The advances in HVAC technology were what allowed the ductless heat pump to do just what it said it could do. And still, I just couldn’t believe it. Well, seeing is believing as they say. And I see every single day that I was so totally and completely wrong when it came to ductless heat pumps. This is because I now have a ductless multi split system heating and cooling my home. That’s right, instead of replacing the old heat pump with another heat pump, we ran into a problem. That would be the fact that the ductwork just wouldn’t hold up any longer. The added expense and chaos of having all the ductwork in our home removed and replaced was a non starter. The HVAC contractor suggested the ductless multi split idea and of course I rejected it out of hand. Thankfully, he took me to a place that had it to show me just the level of quality heating and air that comes from ductless heat pumps.

There was a trifecta of winnings when the HVAC company installed our new whole home air purification system not too long ago.

In one move, we solved indoor air odor, indoor air pollution and providing an allergy free refuge for me. And I’m the one who was so reluctant to spend the money on a whole home air purification system. For sure, this sort of air purifier is on the expensive end of the scale. However, it’s absolutely worth the money. Had I spent one day with this sort of air purifier, there would have been zero resistance from me on putting in the whole home air purification system. Thankfully, my wife just really doesn’t like to take no for an answer. She just hated the smell in our house. For me, it wasn’t all that bad but then again some of the apartments I lived in were pretty rank. So perhaps I burned out that part of my nose. But my wife was right, the house did smell funky and the HVAC was just turning that odor over and over again. It barely dissipated and would just continually get added to. But the pandemic was the final tipping point. How am I going to say no to something that produces the best indoor air quality? That’s just not going to happen. So the HVAC company installed the whole home air purifier inside the air handler of the HVAC. It took all of maybe an hour for the HVAC technician to install. And then it took less than 24 hours to completely transform the air quality in our home.

Residential HVAC doesn’t just take care of itself.

I don’t know about anyone else but I just don’t have thousands of dollars laying around to spend on new HVAC equipment. When I bought our current HVAC unit, it was with the thought in mind that it would work for at least a quarter of a century. And it would not only last but continue to be reliable, efficient and always produce quality heating and air. Thus far, that’s exactly what I am experiencing. I didn’t cheap out on the HVAC equipment I bought either. It came with plenty of the latest and greatest HVAC technology I could find in residential HVAC. The SEER rating alone is probably the highest I could have found. But just having great equipment is not the end of the equation when it comes to decades of quality heating and air. Nope, there is more to protecting that sort of investment and it comes in the form of HVAC service. There is no way that I would spend the money I did and not take it the extra step. As soon as our HVAC equipment was installed, I made sure that I called the HVAC company to sign up for the HVAC service plan. Residential HVAC doesn’t just take care of itself. HVAC equipment requires seasonal HVAC service. That means the HVAC technician is here in the fall for heating maintenance and back in the spring to do the air conditioner tune-up. I’m basically just investing in our HVAC equipment’s longevity by making sure that HVAC maintenance happens when it’s supposed to.

So I’ve been really eager to sell the house.

This is something that I’ve been experiencing for several years.

And there are some basic factors involved with this feeling. For one, the house is just too dang big for just my wife and I. The heating and cooling costs alone are just far too high for heating and cooling just two people, a dog and a cat. Plus, the kids are gone and this house was really their house in my mind. It’s just not the same here now that they have grown up and are starting their own lives. The fact that the real estate market is white hot in this region certainly got my attention as well. We went from hoping to make a modest profit at best to really getting paid when we sell this home. All of these factors came together in a way that my wife and I agreed it was time to pull the trigger on selling this house. Well now that we’ve done all the improvements the realtor suggested, I’m almost hesitant to move. The thing I’ve really fallen in love with is the new HVAC equipment and HVAC technology that is in this house now. The house now has zone controlled HVAC along with HVAC equipment with just about the hight SEER rating one can find in residential HVAC. Then there is the smart thermostat. This thing is just awesome. Not only does it save us money by managing the HVAC output so much better than I ever could, it does it on its own. Now that we have this perfect quality heating and air, I’m seriously reluctant to list the house.

Working from home was not an issue for me. My tenure at working in an office building ended many years ago. The first step of good SEO is to make sure all the meta-data for the site is aligned with that key word. But the thing is every air filter site will have a similar set up, so the next step up in SEO is to make separate pages for all the different air filters you sell, and set those keywords and data to that specific brand. This way if someone types in a search for that particular brand, your SEO-enhanced page will jump to the top of the rankings. Seo is detailed work, but it’s important.

In a strange way, the quarantine made my life better.

Not at first, of course! The first few weeks were harrowing, not only because I was afraid about what was going to happen next, but also because I lost my job and had no way to pay the bills.

The next few months got better, and although life didn’t improve at least it held steady long enough for me to formulate a plan for the future. Although my last job had let me go, I still had a valuable set of IT skills, so I started looking for freelance jobs. The biggest obstacle I had when finding SEO work was trying to explain to people what SEO was, and how important it could be to their business! It turns out that a lot of people who have business websites are not very tech savvy, and don’t understand search engine optimization at all. It has come up enough times that I have a pretty good way of explaining SEO to them. First I have them type in the key search term they want for their site, and where they rank in the results, and then I have them look up a similar business that has professional SEO for their site. This site is always on the first page of search results, so this gives me a concrete example of SEO at work. With that in mind, I can start to explain to them how they can start implementing search engine optimization techniques on their websites, and start to receive more traffic.

About six months ago, my mother-in-law suffered a stroke.

She spent some time in the hospital and then transitioned to the nursing home.

She had difficulty walking and speaking, and her thoughts were a bit muddled. It was especially hard on my father-in-law. The whole family was extremely thankful when my mother-in-law was finally released and allowed to go home. Although her recovery has been truly impressive, she has lost a bit of functionality. Physical rehabilitation has helped a great deal. She’s gone from a wheelchair to a walker and finally a cane that she rarely requires. Her speech is nearly 100%, and her mind is as sharp as ever. However, she and my father-in-law are in their eighties now and need some help around the house. One of the services that has been extremely beneficial is meal delivery. My mother-in-law was never a fan of cooking. She and my father-in-law typically went out for dinner nearly every evening. My mother-in-law was always the driver. We aren’t sure if she’ll ever be ready to get behind the wheel again. For now, it’s much safer and more convenient to have dinner delivered to them. Although my in-laws aren’t experts at navigating the internet, the interactive web site of the meal delivery service is super easy. They have no problem picking out the meals they want for the week. The menu offers enough variety that they both can find items they like. The meals are dropped off with instructions for preparation and usually require nothing more than baking in the oven. My in-laws both claim that the meals taste homemade. Their only complaint is that the portions are too big for them. They always have leftovers.
