The Quietest Air Conditioners

We’re sitting pretty right about now even though we are about to enter a four month period that will test just about anybody. I’m a native of this region and the Summer heat and humidity continue to pummel me during what I call heat season. There really isn’t a cold season where I live. There might only be a half dozen or so times when we have to bring in the plants and fire up the heat pump for some heating. Mostly, the heat pump just rests after all the air conditioning demand placed on it the other 8 months. But the four months from June through July are definitely the biggest test for the residential HVAC. Shoot, it’s a big test for the latest in commercial HVAC as well. So I’ve always been sure to get an air conditioning tune up every single year. There are two reasons for this really. The first is sort of corny but I believed in HVAC maintenance because my dad did. He always reminded me that air conditioning was a privilege and not a right. And that the HVAC equipment is for sure an investment and something that has to be cared for the way I’d care for my car or my boat. The other reason was just educating myself. I learned that, on average, HVAC equipment that got regular HVAC maintenance outlasted the ones that didn’t by at least 7 years. Factor in all the cumulative savings that come with having a heat pump operating at full efficiency and that’s all it took for me. I’ve now had my residential HVAC equipment 28 years and we just got the thumbs up from the HVAC technician for yet another heat season of air conditioning.

And I also realized in that moment that we were going to have a whole lot of work ahead of us.

But, that was just the way it was going to be. I had been given a promotion that came with a relocation. Normally, that wouldn’t be so bad as this is the norm in my industry. However, after nearly 15 years of my wife following me around the country to further my career, we had settled down and bought our dream home. I had finally made it to corporate and we figured the relocating days were behind us. That led to really putting down roots in the community and enjoying our home. We had a yard big enough for a garden and a kitchen that was the envy of the neighborhood. We also enjoyed the very best in residential HVAC and HVAC technology as well. It felt like all that effort in my career had finally come to fruition. But the pandemic nearly wrecked our company. So it has been all hands on deck for a while now. That meant a lot of travel for me that was outside the zone controlled HVAC of the corporate headquarters. And eventually, I got my marching orders to take over the worst of the regional offices which would be at least a 3 or 4 years commitment. That meant leaving the home we loved. So I promised my wife that she could choose the home we lived in and we’d do whatever renovating we needed to do to make it home. The first thing we had to address was the heating and cooling. Since the ductwork was worthless, we went with a ductless multi split system and it’s the best.

For the most part, living out in the country was just like how I always dreamed of it to be.

• Which is awesome, because there were so many things in my life that I would dream about being one way, and then when I would actually get it, it would turn out to be completely different, and not something I wanted at all.

It was always a crushing disappointment when that happened. However, living out in the country has turned out to be almost perfect. There are a few flaws I could point out, like the yard work is atrocious, and it is insect galore here. But I also get peace and quiet, as well as enough land to create my own garden, as well as own horses, a lifelong dream of mine. Really, only one of the other flaws I could think of, is the fact that it is difficult to get certain companies to visit my home, such as HVAC services. I have to contact different A/C corporations, as well as independent heating and cooling workers, to see if any are willing to come out to my home. Then finding my home is another ordeal in itself. Not that ago, I had a HVAC tech come out to my home for air duct sealing, and he called me and asked where my home was. I had to explain directions to him, because my home is surrounded by trees, and at first glance, it looks almost like a forest. Once I gave him the proper instructions, he was able to find my home with ease, and the air duct sealing was completed.

I like to do this every morning before I attend to the chores of the day. Reading on my phone allows me to wake up a bit, and prepare for the day. Well, my reading was interrupted when I suddenly heard a knock at the door. That was very strange, because I wasn’t expecting company, and it was 8:00 am in the morning, and all of my family knows I am not a morning person. I looked out the peephole, and I didn’t recognize the person, but I noticed some kind of business truck in my driveway. Upon opening the door, a friendly HVAC professional greeted me, and told me he was here for a central air conditioner repair. I told him that he had the wrong home, as my central HVAC was fine, and I didn’t need a HVAC repair. The cooling worker looked at me confused, and I informed him of a home down the street that looks almost identical to mine. I saw a lightbulb go off in his head, and the cooling worker thanked me and was on his way. I watched him pull his air conditioning van out of my driveway, and then proceed down the street in the direction of the right home. Hopefully he found the right home ok. I would think he did, because there is only one other home in the neighborhood that looks similar to mine. But I knew that the A/C appointment wasn’t mine, because I stay on top of my HVAC maintenance.

I know today was the latest I’ve slept in 25 years after playing so several hours last evening in the band plus practicing beach volleyball beforehand for a solid hour. I know my body just finally melted down last evening plus needed a lot of sleep… I was in bed last evening at 11:30pm plus didn’t get out of bed till 12pm today. Beach volleyball plus playing drums plus singing are both certainly intense plus after four hours of doing both my body said enough is enough. When I got condo I just ate cheese plus bread, then my air con system was turned on in my study room for a long temperature controlled slumber to recharge the body. Today I will do my writing online for a few hours plus then go to the beach later when the sun is lower plus just rest in the sand. I’m sure my Heating plus A/C rep friends will be playing volleyball plus asking me to play, but there is no way my shoulders will be able to do the athletic activity. I have to do some work next week for the local business plus am going to need strong shoulders to do so, so today plus tomorrow will be rest afternoons for me plus the band. My buddy and I may play a little tomorrow evening but I won’t drum most likely plus just do some singing because my shoulders will entirely be even more sore tomorrow. Next week my friend and I have to install a pressing air duct system for the neighborhood hall plus I will have to do a lot of the Heating plus A/C work myself.

Today I will do my writing online for a few hours plus then go to the beach later when the sun is lower plus just rest in the sand. I’m sure my Heating, Ventilation, plus A/C rep friends will be playing volleyball plus asking me to play, however there is no way my shoulders will be able to do the hobby. I have to do some labor next week for the local supplier plus am going to need strong shoulders to do so, so today plus tomorrow will be rest mornings for me plus the band. My buddy and I may play a little tomorrow night even though I won’t drum most likely plus just do some singing because my shoulders will easily be even more sore tomorrow. Next week my buddy and I have to install a large HVAC duct system for the town hall plus I will have to do a lot of the Heating, Ventilation, plus A/C labor myself.

 

Quality HVAC

This week is the second afternoon now of feeling better after a week of feeling less than ideal. I had the flu for almost a week and yupterday was the first whole afternoon of not feeling those nasty symptoms. I will write this and then head down to the produce stand and grab some plums so I can have my kefir and peach dinner on the beach soon, and i think I’ll go to the main produce store because the plums there are a lot fresher and at better prices too. I’ll walk down there to the local contractor and grab them, walk back home to my air conditioned flat and drop them off, and then head to the beach with one of them. I have about two hours of labor to do today and then my acquaintance is coming to visit for the rest of the afternoon before she flies out actually early in the afternoon. I want to clean the HEPA filter too before she gets here because I know that she needs great indoor air quality or she will be sneezing the whole night. I will also stock up on a bunch of fruits and veggies so she has something to eat for the short time she will be here. I have a small temperature controlled office that she can sleep in for the night, while I sleep in my air conditioned bedroom on the other side of the flat. It should be nice seeing her as I don’t think I have seen her for about three years at this point.

I love being a dad at this stage of my eldest son’s life.

He’s a absolutely superb child and I’ve never had to kneel up late inside the central air conditioner of the family home worrying about him. But as he is a rising senior, I absolutely want to start to help him understand a bit more of the responsibilities that come with being an adult, but of course, he’s going to spend at least four years inside a dorm room with radiant heating and no air conditioner before he gets his adulting on. So the past six months and the next 15 months are an essential time for a father to pass some real truth on to his son. It’s both exciting and a bit odd because that child is still my little boy in my eyes; Yet, it’s time for him to take on a bit more responsibility inside and outside of the central air conditioner of the house. I don’t want to overload my boy because his academic excellence is going to lead to plenty of scholarship currency. But delegating some of my essential chores is a place to start. So until he’s off to university, he’s going to be in charge of the heating and cooling equipment. That’s not a big thing as far as time but it’s one of those chores that is essential and has to be a priority. It will be up to him to change the air filter for the Heating & Air Conditioning equipment. It will be up to him to schedule the heating repair next Fall. And then follow up by scheduling the air conditioner tune up next Springtime. He’ll be charged with correctly checking all the air ducts to be sure they are all open and uncongested. It’s a superb first step.
